Good news. This season was a little too serious and sacraficed humor to do it but I am happy I will get more episodes next year.

I thought for sure this was the last season. With the low ratings, I'm not even sure why they would renew. I do love the show and am happy it's continuing; I'm just confused over the reasoning.

YES!

I mean, people will probably be mad that there's another season, but damn, I was going to be TICKED if we were left on a cliffhanger.

Who cares? Good television is good television. To ignore a great show simply because its not HD is just goofy.

I believe when it started up this season there was an interview with the producers and they stated they preferred it in SD over HD and it would remain in SD.

I bet it's a lot cheaper overall to continue to put Scrubs out in SD, and thus, even though the ratings are low, the ROI is still good enough to keep producing episodes.

did the interview give any indication why the producers are stupid?

Wasn't in any danger, It's owned by ABC, and they always said, if NBC cancelled it, they would pick it up. Glad its still on NBC tho

Probably the same reason the Shield producers are "stupid"--they've spent years building the show around an aesthetic based on the 4:3 screen, and don't want to uproot everything just to conform to the way everybody else is doing things.

There are things that 4:3 does better than 16:9 (although I admit The Shield takes MUCH better advantage of them than Scrubs). If a show is designed for 4:3, then it should be shot (and shown) in 4:3. And I'm sure that if Scrubs and Shield were being developed today instead of several years ago, they WOULD be in 16:9. But I admire them for taking full advantage of the format they were given, and then sticking to their guns.

Also, owners of HDTV's and 16:9 displays are still the minority.

Well said. I wonder how well Scrubs would "work" in HD anyway. The substantial fantasy element to the show is well-served, I think, by a layer of standard-def softness. There's a good chance HD would subtract as much from the show as it might add.

They wouldn't do it if they weren't making money on it somewhere. The DVD sets sell well, I believe;the series is all over syndicated TV; and its share of the download market on iTunes is much, much higher than its share of the ratings pie on the tube.

Just because they choose to only do it in SD doesn't make them stupid.

One of the reasons that the producers chose 4:3 SD is that the hospital they used has old, narrow hallways. They tried it in 16:9 HD, but did not like the results. Here's the thread about it on AVS Forum. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=830440&highlight=scrubs)

I think those NuvaRing people are perhaps the only ones who would benefit from this show being in broadcast in HD.

The Wire is another show that they kept shooting in 4:3 by concious choice due to the aesthetic.

I am kind of surprised at the news for Scrubs. Some of teh story lines were a little contrived this year, like they ran out of great ideas. I also wonder what the deal wil be with teh final episodes this year since they thought it would be ending.

Actually they didn't. Bill Lawrence has been saying for a while that he expected to be back for one more season, if not on NBC then on ABC. So...

... the season ends with a cliffhanger concerning the JD-Elliot-Kim triangle.

Yes. Next season, the 7th, is the last. This time everybody is acknowledging it.

Season 7 is the big hump. The standard contract that an actor signs before making the pilot is for the producers to have an option for 7 years. After 7 years, all of the principal actor's contracts come up for renegotiation at the same time. Most of the actors have played the character long enough and want to go do something else before they get pigeonholed. It's very, very tough to get a show to go past 7 years.

And in this case, Braff was signed for six. He agreed to a one-year deal to the 7th.
