View Full Version : So, I upgraded my oldest Tivo (small upgrade)

From the old 240- series2 Tivo single tuner to a factory refurb dual tuner, loving the dual tuners. Makes life sooo much easier. I am thinking about also doing the one in the bedroom which is newer. But...

What can I do with my old Tivo? I don't want to keep it activated and pay a monthly fee for it. If I were to cancel it and upgrade the hard drive with a 320gb drive could I still keep it on the network as a storage tivo for the other two? What can a cancelled Tivo do? I know it has no guide info but it can still record "by time or channel" right? Mostly can it still be visible to the other two Tivos on the network.

That brings me to a point that irritates me a little about Tivo. That is their lack of really utilizing the networkability of Tivo boxes. It should be very easy to add the ability to PUSH shows to another box instead of having to PULL them from one to the other. Also, they are aware of each other, why can they not work together to deal with scheduling conflicts? If one Tivo can't record a show due to higher priority schedules, how come it can't ask my other Tivo if it has that slot free and if it does have it record the show for it, then automatically transfer it to the one that actually has the schedule. This kind of intelligence is something that would really give Tivo a leg up on the competition.

Something else that would be cool, if you could browse the schedule of another Tivo from a networked one. The ability to modify the schedule of one from another, etc. How about the ability to send a schedule from one to another? It could also send the recording history of that schedule along with it. How about the ability to MOVE a show from one Tivo to another instead of just the ability to copy it.

I just wish these guys would think outside the box a little.

You haven't upgraded your TiVo.

You replaced it.

Upgrading is when you do stuff like yank the hard drive and put in a bigger one.

An unsubscribed TiVo cannot use MRV.

As for all your other suggestions...well, they have been requested and suggested for years. It would be wonderful to use other boxes to resolve schedule conflicts, PUSH shows, and edit ToDo an the NPL form other boxes. As for if and when TiVo will feature these things, well, one will never know.

Don't be a pedant. I upgraded the one that was sitting in its spot with a newer one with better features. Sheeh.

I knew you were going to say that. Just wanted to be 100% certain. Thanks for the reply.

As for the suggestions, yea, they are too obvious to have been original. I was just ranting about stuff that they should have done from the time they added networking to the Tivo, getting it off my chest.

Sorry, but your 240 has not been upgraded. It's the same as it was.
Now call me pedantic for calling you out on your ignorance and your unwillingness to learn from the first correction you received.

As for your suggestions - They belong in the forum that's been set aside especially for them. It makes it a whole lot easier for everyone to ignore them if you post them in the proper forum.

I haven't been corrected. I have had a couple of twits make useless points. Let me clarify for you: The SPOT that my TIVO used to sit in has been upgraded. It now hosts a device with two tuners instead of a device with one.

You are a nitwit. Thanks for the fun.

We have a language issue here, nothing more because when anybody uses the words "Upgrade a TiVo" it means to the people on this form that you put a bigger hard drive in the unit. In the rest of the world upgrade can mean many different things to different people as in I bought a new TV to replace my old TV or I upgraded my old TV

Oh I understand their "mistake" :) However, I think it was plain as night and day from the context of the post what actually happened. They are obviously smart enough to turn on a computer and launch a web browser, so I feel they are intelligent enough to make that astounding deduction. I am pretty confident that they were being typical forum trolls.

Regardless my question was answered early on by Supasta. Frankly, I keep checking back just to see what further goofy responses they post. I think they are on to other interesting troll activities now though, so guess all the action here is over.

I am pretty confident that they were being typical forum trolls. actually they have all been around this forum a long time and have helped plenty of people with all kinds of questions/problems. They are not trolls at all and most of the forum readers kinow this from seeing many other of their posts taken as a whole. It would be great to welcome you as a part of this community but you should think about how you are looking right now in your insistence on not just accepting the info on some TiVo lingo and moving on from it gracefully.

Gotta be honest with you, if that is your idea of this "community", I really have no desire to be a part of it. If you can't see the asinine massively unhelpful, and purely trollish nature of their responses then so be it, I won't be bothered to post here again. It really isn't any skin off my back. Thanks, but no thanks.

Yes, calm posters like you who would be slow to insult others and would instead engage in trading ideas and information would be better for this community. Sorry it did not work out for you.

Congrats on the dual tuners, I would definitely like to see a PUSH of shows from one tivo to another...oh well.

edit: oops, didn't see that they won't be reading these posts anymore...

Actually, I just said I wouldn't be participating :) I will still come here from time to time and read. I'm not running off in a hissy fit or anything. Some people here obviously suffer from some sort of insignificance syndrome and like to jump all over someone that doesn't immediately bow down to their specific use of the word "upgrade". While my use of the term was 100% correct, I guess they think they can redefine or narrow the scope of the word. Like they have some sort of badge of language use enforcement. Naaa, I'm going to just let them have their playground.

Not sure where you get off, but you will notice that mick66 or whatever started the ball rolling by calling me ignorant for the reason I listed above. That is ridiculous. While I did refer to the first guy as a pedant, that was... accurate. You know, like calling a baseball round. For some reason those guys thought it appropriate to attack me for no good reason and I took a bit of offense. So sue me, I'm not one to take a swing without returning it. You don't like it? Don't take a swing at me.
