Other then CBS, I dont know if anyone has noticed but not one new show on any other network made it this year. Drive, Smith, and my favorite Black Donnellys were all cancelled. Last yr we had surface, threshold, and invasion all cancelled. Alot of these shows were great! The biggest problem seems to be "the ratings". But truthfully, how are ratings determined? By 1960s Neilson boxes from Random people in the midwest with one tv channel on all night?
My point is this. Its a new time... Nowadays, the majority of people are watching/tivo'ing/recording 2 shows at the least at the same time. So just because my tv is tuned to Fox News on Monday night at 10pm because I just got done watching prison break then 24, I am tivo'ing Black Donnellys on a different channel. We need tivo to save our shows. Smith had a lineup of stars yet was given 3 weeks. Donnellys had the writers from 2 academy award movie directors and was given 6 weeks. If tivo offered a choice to there customers where if the client is willing to be "big brothered" on the shows they watch, the networks could truly find out what shows are being watched. And I got news for the networks, I enjoy watching my favorite shows later in the night then the scheduled time. If tivo could generate reports to the network on whats being recorded or who has a season pass to what, the networks might finally learn when they have a hit. Jericho, thankfully was saved bc I like to think it was given a chance on CBS. It has turned out to be one of the best shows on network tv this season. I just which the networks could change with the times to figure out whos watching what. And tivo has the power to provide that info. Lets make this happen and maybe we could avoid losing all the shows we get hooked on after 3 wks only to be yanked off the air.
Its seriously gotten to the point where its not worth watching a show until its hit 7 episodes. And even then be careful!
Step up Tivo, we need you. Neilson got old the second we were able to record 2 episodes at once.
Thanks for your time.
If anyone agrees just add your thoughts or type agree. Maybe we can get this thread enough replies where tivo will give it a shot.

You, of course, watched all the commercials, right?

On TiVo's website there is a list of popular shows. TiVo does track it.

I see your point - we live in a society that doesn't mirror Nielsen and the antiquated way that they track.

yep, nielson has been tracking DVR season passes since december 2005. TiVo is also supplying what ads are watched - down to the second. for those that opt in to sharing the data off their TiVo.

the networks had data on who was watching the shows they just chicken out really quickly now adays with FOX (BIH) being the worst. Now I have the habit of recording new shows and like the OP said wait 5 to 7 weeks to start watching. After being burned by Surface and then Smith and then Donnely's I had enough and just recorded Drive - just yesterday I hade a smug smile while I deleted UNWATCHED the 3 shows I had recorded

By "made it", you certainly can't mean "got renewed", because I'm pretty sure Ugly Betty and Men In Trees (and Brothers and Sisters, too, I think) have been renewed on ABC and 30 Rock was renewed on NBC, unless of course you were referring only to shows you happen to watch.

Nevermind Neilson tracking dvr. If i understand correctly you mean you need a dvr and a neilson box. What Im saying is you should have an option within Tivo to allow data to be shared to everyone who needs it on what shows your watching. If I am wrong in understanding, then by all means, tell me how to do it.

You don't have to do anything. Tivo Inc already polls the Tivos in your house and provides the aggregate data (such as season passes) to companies that wish it (ie purchase).

You did not understand me correctly,
What I said is that TiVo can gather recording/viewing info and sell it and has since the begining of 2006.

Default level by just agreeing to TOS is that they can not match that info to your account but can match it to your zip code.

You can opt in to a different privacy level adn they can match the data to your account though that is more for features like guru guides etc.. Nielson may ask you to be a Neilson house and then they get that info from TiVo if you agree.

also there is TiVo panel group you can join - at that point you answer some demographic question like numebr of kids, income , etc.. and while still the data is not pegged to your specific name - TiVo can deliver the info broken down by demographic categories.
(I looked around for a URL to join up but can not find it, sorry)
the added twist of a TiVo DVR is they not only can say what show was watched but also what, if any commercials are watched and even what seconds of the commercial.
