My TiVo has slowed to a crawl and gets almost scramlbed playback sometimes. IS this because the hard drive is dead? Any suggestions? Thanks

Probably. But, I'd do a Clear & Delete Everything first. If that fails, then you know it's the hard drive. If okay, then maybe the system will be okay.

Sure. Do a search in the Underground area for 'mfstools backup' or check out things like the Hinsdale guide (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/) or weaknees.com's Interactive Upgrade Guide (http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php). Replacing your TiVo's drive is relatively easy, and you can upgrade to a larger one while you're at it.

Is choppy playbnack a sign that the HDD is fried? Don't wanna upgrade the HDD and find it is still toast.

It could be, no way to really tell for sure.

You could try forcing a GSOD (green screen of death) which is actually a mfscheck that will scan the drive. Check out the 'kickstart' section of this document (http://alt.org/wiki/index.php/TivoDiagnostics).
