I went to the Tivo site and went through a screen or two. "Chose a price plan" was where I selected 3 years for the $299.00. But then it wants to know what "box" I want.

I read a number of the other threads on pricing and costs and some folks think the info is clear and others think it is as "clear as mud." So I'm just asking what is available if I purchase from Costco (where I can return the unit for 90 days and get a two year warranty)

I have a Lifetime for a Series 2 but when I called the other day, they said I could not upgrade. I guess whether you can or cannot upgrade any longer is merely "luck of the draw!"

Thanks in advance

Yes, the lifetime transfer was officially over a while ago, but if you get a CSR that is in a good mood, some people have had success.

You can pick any prepay or monthly plan on a S3 that you buy anywhere. Once you get the box home from Costco, go to www.tivo.com/activate, pick the plan that you want and put in the serial number and you're set.

I bought mine at Costco in January and ran it for 7 days while deciding which plan to go with, then on the 7th day i finally signed up for their pre-paid $299/3-year plan.

If you don't mind - how did you run it for 7 days before deciding on which service plan? Does it come with "trial activation?" Can you actually pre-schedule shows? Or did you just manually start recording programs?

Thanks.

You have 7 days to activate and once you activate, you have 30 days to change your mind.

FYI - The 7-days is more like 5.5 to 6.5 or so - so don't wait until the last second, or you miss shows for a day or so before realising you forgot to purchase/activate the plan!

Once i set it up and connected to my phone line and powered it up, i had full functionality for 7 days - guide data, wishlists, the whole works. I got my Cablecards installed at about day 3 then 4 days later i subscribed. I set it up on Saturday afternoon, then subscribed early the next Saturday morning just under the wire ;)

Thanks, everyone for the replies. That probably helps with the decision. Costco does not sell Tivo locally anymore so I guess I will log on and "byte" the bullet.

fred2, FWIW, it doesn't seem like the TiVo S3 is affected by the 90-day return policy change.

Compare the descriptions of a TiVo S3 and say a Sharp LCD TV, and you will see that there are no notices about return policies, concierge services, etc. on the TiVo.

YMMV. Purchase at your own risk. :)

How to you select it? I mean the online selection does not allow for selecting no box. Did you do it over the phone? Thanks.
