I have a series 3 HD model and I hate the fact that you MUST use the cablecards.
I really wish you could input a signal and have an IR blaster similar to the other models. This would be such a relief. I really don't mind paying the cable box fee.

Additionally, there are lots of people using satelitte that cannot get the series 3 since they don't use cablecards.

Maybe you guys could just enhance the series 2 a little bit to handle HD signals, throw in a bigger hard drive and call it a day.

If this whole decision was based off copyright laws, then you should be very clear about this fact so people understand it. Right now it looks like you make poor design decisions.

Would you mind paying several thousand dollars for an S2HD? Because the technology to recompress an uncompressed HDMI signal would likely result in an S2HD which is SUBSTANTIALLY more expensive than the S3. There has been a TON of discussion on this issue. Search is your friend.

It wasn't based on copyright laws, directly, but becasue ot the cost of technology, in that directly tuning digital cable is much cheaper than encoding uncompressed HD video from HDMI or component. Albeit at the expense of non cable/OTA users, and having to to answer to Cablelabs.

Indirectly, it could ve consumer grade component in HD encoders are held at artificially high cost becasue of piracy fears by the studios.
