View Full Version : S3 "sidebars" are NOT entirely black... I see the "channel banner"

Hi-

When I'm viewing SD content and the aspect mode is set to "panel," the sidebars aren't actually pure black, but show a faint outline of the channel banner. Even if I show grey sidebars, I can still see the faint shadow of the channel banner.

Before anyone asks, it's not burn-in. I've got a new LCD panel, and when I change inputs, or go "full screen," the image of the channel banner disappears.

This is a bit disappointing - I know burn-in is a small risk on an LCD, but the faint shadows are damned annoying.

Anyone know of a fix, or is it perhaps part of 8.3.1?

Thanks!

Don't view in with aspect mode set on panel? :)

I doubt seriously the update has anything to do with it. It's probably in the broadcast itself.

Hi-

No, it's not the broadcast...

If I keep cycling between aspect modes, it goes Full, Zoom, Panel, right?

Whatever fills the screen in zoom stays, very faintly, in the sidebars, each and every time. As I continue to cycle between aspect modes, it's always a faint copy of whatever is on the full screen when I go to panel.

Make sense?

And, it doesn't happen when viewing an HD channel broadcasting in 4:3... the sidebars are black in that case.

Huh... any thoughts?

It may be the TV itself. LCDs have what is called "persistence" in varying degrees wherein the image in the liquid crystals that make up the panel fade out over time. Some LCDs are much quicker at the "fade-out", making it imperceptible.

It's possible the TV is faulty. If not, it may be something you have to live with. Have you tried the TV with any other sources, i.e OTA or a DVD to see if it still happens?

Hi-

No, it's not the TV...

when I'm watching an HD channel that braodcasts in 4:3, the sidebars ARE black... and then if I go right from there to an SD channel broadcast in 4:3 (AND I clear the channel banner quickly), there's no shadow of what was there before.

However, if I go from 4:3 HD to 4:3 SD WITHOUT clearing the channel bar, the channel bar from the HD channel DOES appear on the sidebars of the SD channel.

Unless I'm missing something here, it does seem to be the TiVo doing it. Would anyone else mind doing some similar testing?

Thanks!

I tried your settings, panel (both grey and black) and could not see what you describe. I'm using component connection and tried both a Panasonic plasma and Sharp LCD.

As an experiment, try changing the connection from HDMI to component or vice versa.
