I'll need to get home, where my TiVo is, to find out if anything is different.

For whatever reason, TiVo decided that the format most people use on the internet isn't supported....I thought maybe that would be a beta limitation, but I guess not.
Why, why, why? Is it a licensing thing? How about XviD?

BS! Does not live up to the hype of their press releases!!
Like everything else lately, they got it half done and moved on..!

So is it not worth upgrading? 2.3a to 2.4?

The reason is simple. They're currently using a DirectShow wrapper around QuickTime to decode the currently supported formats.* Unfortunately QuickTime does not play DivX/Xvid files, so this system does not support them.

Dan

* The one exception is WMV files which is handled by a different mechanism. However that was much easier to implement as the filters required for support of WMV are included with Windows XP by default. AVI is a much more generic format, which can hold video and audio encoded in a multitude of formats, so it's a lot more difficult to support.

And still no Vista support - will not even install.

Hi,

Just upgraded to TiVo Desktop 2.4 because it (supposedly) supports publishing QuickTime and Windows Media video files from my PC to the TiVo. I thought, "that sounds cool, no need to convert files to MPEG2 anymore. However, I've place several QuickTime and Windows Media video files in the My TiVo Recordings folder and they do not appear - not in the TiVo Desktop Now Playing screen or on the DVR Now Playing screen for my PC. I've tried rebooting both PC and DVR post-upgrade to 2.4 with no luck. I tried searching the TiVo Support Knowledgebase which was an utter waste of time. Anyone have any suggestions or is this yet another poorly implemented feature requiring some kludge to get around?

Thanks,
Greg

Are you using TiVo Desktop 2.4 "plus"?

"System Requirements: To use the web video transfer feature, you need:
• TiVo Desktop version 2.4 with a valid TiVo Desktop 2.3 Plus upgrade key. Visit tivo.com/desktop to purchase an upgrade key if you don't have one already.
• QuickTime, version 7.1.3. Click here if you need to update your version of Quicktime.
...
Supported video formats from the TiVo Desktop Video tab in the Publish Media section:
• Windows Media Video (.wmv)
• QuickTime Movie (.mov)
• MPEG-4/H.264 (.mp4, .m4v, .mp4v)
• MPEG-2 (.mpg, .mpeg, .mpe, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpv2)

Videos that are protected with Digital Rights Management (DRM) are not supported."

Also, you can put a shortcut to the folders holding your video files in the TiVo Desktop folder. No need to move them. Unfortunately, TD doesn't support folders when displaying files either locally or on the TiVo, so if you have a large library like I do, it can take a while to scroll.

I know it doesn't help the cause.. but for the record, yet another disgruntled Tivo owner here.

No Xvid, Divx or folders? Then what DOES it do? All I know that it does for sure is that it breaks Tivo.net. Shame that a group of programmers (I assume Tivo has more than one) can't accomplish something one person already has. Add to that fact that Tivo has the ability to add in functions to the box itself.. and it is completely unexcuseable.

Personally, I'm letting my year run out then switching back to HTPC. I thought Tivo would be alot more stable, polished, and functional then a home-built solution... but I was wrong. Really wrong.

TD 2.4 does not break tivo.net
It's the spring 2007 update of 8.3 that breaks tivo.net subfolders.

It's all of those things. What it's not is customizable and upgradeable in the same way.

My new mantra: Tivo, love the concept.. hate the execution.

What I meant by TD 2.4 breaks it.. is that it probably are changes in the spring update specifically for the practically useless TD 2.4 that breaks everything else ever good that was made for tivo. If you ask me.. that's stepping backwards.. not forwards. And with all the competition.. tivo needs to go forward. I would think Tivo by now would grasp the concept of success they could obtain with the wonder machine (VCR, MUSIC JUKEBOX, APPLETV,etc) all in one box.. but I think they lost the vision and along the way, the battle for the living room. At this point they are just going through the motions.

All in all.. the only reason I hate Tivo Desktop 2.4 is that I know the potential it had. Just like HME had (another heartbreak)... But ya can't survive on potential.. you need to execute. And that is Tivo's current problem in a nutshell. All potential and no real advancement whatsoever. Where are folders, divx/xvid support, Unbox selection on tivo, a better mp3 player, heck even a calendar, internet videos, etc? Ya know.. the stuff individuals have been making for tivo that Tivo itself should have made.

I finally got things working..so now i understand what you're saying here.....

If it can look INTO the sub-folders why cant it leave the files in the sub-folders??!?!?!?!?!?

Has anybody else had any problems with Auto-transfers since upgrading TD? All of mine seemed to have stopped....I'll cancel one then recreate it...see if that works...

Does anyone know where I can still get 2.3? I uninstalled it yesterday (having some computer problems) and went to redownload it today and it's gone! I'm running Vista, and had 2.3 running fine but 2.4 won't install no matter how I set up compatibility. - sheureka

Never mind - found it at Major Geeks - sheureka

I agree. Love the concept, hate the execution!

I see that I do need the plus upgrade, but before I shell out the additional dollars can someone clarify if the Desktop 2.4 with Plus upgrade effectively replaces the functionality of TivoNET or is there a particular reason to stick with one vs. the other or both?

TiVo.Net (or pyTiVo) supports any video format that ffmpeg can handle (including DivX, Xvid, Flash, etc.).

TiVo Desktop 2.4 with the Plus option:

Note: Supported video formats include .WMV (Windows Media), .MP4 and .M4V (MPEG-4, H.264). Videos that are protected with DRM are not supported.

An open letter to the team behind Tivo Desktop: You are not good at your job. It's that simple. You are not good.

People have been asking for some pretty basic features here for a long time. The ability to recognize folders and sub folders comes to mind. This is very, very essential to organizing stored shows.

This is laughable. I can't imagine anyone doing a worse job than the current Tivo Desktop "team". Please go beg the open source programmers for some tips on how to do the job you are PAID to do.

I've used the MPEG-4 converter in TiVo Desktop Plus v2.4a. It only generates QVGA video files. How do I get TDP to make full VGA .m4v fies?

Thanks,
Steven

You use a different tool. TiVo's tools limit the resolution intentionally to reduce the likelihood that files converted with their tools end up on bit torrent. they don't want to have to do any [Ricky Ricardo] 'splainen [/Ricky Ricardo] to the content owners how their tools could be facilitating illegal file sharing.
