Hello, new here. o/

Just switched to tivo from comcast DVR and I'm loving it. I have a question about my season passes. If I set the program to keep at most 5 episodes and the "keep until I delete" option. Will I always have the latest 5 aired episodes saved?...In other words will the oldest of the episodes that I have saved for that season pass be over written or will the unit not record the new episode?

Thanks.

Frank

"Keep at most ... " affects only recordings that TiVo can delete. TiVo will never delete a recording flagged as "Keep until I delete".

Your tivo would record 5 episodes and then stop recording.
It's best not to over use the 'keep until I delete' option.

I use the "Keep until I delete" option when I am recording a TV series and I know it's only on once a week and I have the show set to "First run Only" and to keep "All Shows" OR when I'm recording a movie.

Great. Thank you.

So am I right to assume that If I set a season pass to keep at most 5 episodes I will always have the last 5 episodes of that program? I'm not quite sure when it is that my season pass shows will be overwritten by other recordings or other season passes. If I put Lost, for example as my number one priority season pass will I have my 5 episodes there and they never get overwritten?

What will happen is the first 5 episodes that get recorded after you have set up the season pass will stay there until you delete one of them (as long as you have it set to only delete when you want). If you have 5 episodes of Lost and another one is on, it will NOT record that next episode unless you delete one of the other 5 episodes first.

To keep the latest 5 all the time you set the SP to keep at most 5 and DO NOT use the save until I Delete.

This works as long as nothing else uses up TiVo's space and forces the deletion of the oldest recording.

Also be aware that any change to the SP's options causes the old recorded shows to be dissociated from the SP; that is if 5 shows have been recorded as save until I delete and you change the SP's options to keep until space needed TiVo will record 5 more BEFORE the SP causes deletions.

Also. Keep at Most means just that. It doesn't guarantee that there will be 5 episodes kept, just that there won't be more than five.

If your TiVo runs out of space (i.e. the hard drive fills up) it will start deleting things. The first to go are any Deleted Shows in the Deleted Shows folder. Then any TiVo Suggestions. And finally it will start deleting normal shows.

Normal shows get deleted in the order they expired (which if you haven't adjusted the keep until date is the order they were recorded). Season Pass priority doesn't affect deletion order at all.

So it is possible if Lost went on a month long break, and your TiVo filled up, that the 5th (oldest) episode of Lost (at that point maybe two months old) might be deleted.

Recordings flagged as "Keep until I delete" are never automatically deleted and aren't counted toward "Keep at most ... ", so if you have three episodes of a show flagged "Keep until I delete", you could have between 3 and 6 episodes on the TiVo at any one time (the three "Keep until I delete" episodes plus up to five episodes not flagged "Keep until I delete".)

For "deletable" recordings (those not flagged "Keep until I delete"), they will be deleted to make room for new recordings using a priority-based scheme ...
If the number of deletable episodes of the show on the Tivo is equal to or greater than the "Keep at most" setting, the oldest deletable episode will be deleted first,
Recordings in the "Recently Deleted" list are deleted (permanently) next,
Suggestions will be deleted next,
Recordings older than their "Keep until date" are deleted next on an "oldest first" basis,
Recording which haven't reached their "Keep until" date will be deleted next on an "oldest first" basis.

This process will be used repeatedly until enough space is made available for the new recording. If insufficient room can be made available for the new recording (ie too many recordings flagged as "Keep until I delete"), the new recording will be cancelled.

As was pointed out earlier, "Keep at most" means exactly that, if a station is having a "marathon" showing an entire season's run of a show, you will end up with only the 5 last episodes unless you change the "Keep until" and/or "Keep at most" settings as required. "Keep at most" is the only situation that I know of where a TiVo will automatically delete recordings even if sufficient room already exists for the new recording.

That's wrong (including the math). If the SP is set to KUID, those KUID episodes are included in the KAM count.

Only if you change the KU date on an existing recording, will it no longer follow the settings for that SP and not be included in the KAM count.

If the SP is set to KUID, those KUID episodes are included in the KAM count.Has this changed? I just recorded the entire "Planet Earth" series on Discovery - I set the season pass to KUID, left the KAM count at the default of 5. I ended up with all 10 episodes. It seems to work as I described in my post, at least here (S2ST/8.3)

if you change the KU date on an existing recording, will it no longer follow the settings for that SP and not be included in the KAM count.Yes, I record episodes of Chronicle with default KU and KAM settings and then set specific episodes of interest to KUID - I currently have some 20 episodes on the Tivo, 15 KUID and 5 with default KU. On our systems, it seems to work when the KUID is set by the SP as well.
