We have been D* subscribers since the early 90's and recently upgraded to the 5LNB HD service using the HR20-700 (also using a HR10-250 Tivo). My question is the following; we spend several months in a southern state in the winter and would like to know if we can temporarily change our home address to that location so that we can get our D* service there as well as get the local channels there? Just curious. Thanks

Just call customer svc and tell them you want to change your service address. You probably do not want the Movers Program, but they'll ask you if you do.

Has anyone actually done this with D*? Let me know how to go about this with a CSR. Thanks

Yes, plenty of times. As long as you have the dish and wiring set up in both places, you just need to take your receivers with you. Once you get to your new address, just call DirecTV and tell them to change your service address. It's about a 2-minute phone call. You can either change your billing address too, or leave it at your permanent address (assuming you don't really need to see the bill, and you have it set up for auto-pay).

Well first of all, it would sure help if you told us WHICH places you were at & where you wanted to "move" to. (city names would at least help... ;) )
Nobody has bothered to tell you that the majority of local channels (except for NY & LA) BOTH SD & HD are on spot beams, so if you are physically outside the spot beam for those local channels, you will NOT get any network prog. (unless you are using an antenna to pull in your "real" locals & NOT thru the dish) Some other local channel markets (such as mine) require a 2nd 18" dish to pull in SD locals as well.

Should be easy, especially if you are truely moving from one place to another. Before you head north (or south) simply call them up, tell them you are on your way to your summer home, and change the address. Service address is the key part for locals but I'd assume you would be changing your billing address too since you are really moving and not "moving" just to try and get different locals.
Should be easy as punch. They don't care either way.

Sent an email off to D* and they said that I could NOT temporarily change my service address (to get the Florida city, Fort Myers locals) but could take some of my equipment (already have a portable dish there) and get D* service without the locals. They also said that I could establish a NEW account there but don't want to do that. Any other suggestions?

Do not e-mail - CALL THEM.
Tell them you want to change your service address only, not your billing address. You can have a different service address then your billing address. Leave the billing address alone.
Tell them you are moving to a summer home, have been temporarily relocated for work purposes, etc.
They will let you move temporarily, but you will need to notify them of the addresses as you move from one place to another.
They really don't care what addresses you use at all, as long as they get paid. Just be sure that you get the bills paid all along and things will be fine provided you understand the implications noted above regarding locals and spot beams. If you provide them an address that doesn't fall within the spotbeam that provides locals in your physical location, then don't expect to get locals at all as they'll be telling their systems (and your receivers) that you should get locals from a spotbeam that isn't hitting your area.

Ok, just read your original question a bit better, but don't think it changes things that much. You can change your address with DirecTV at any time. Do it by CALLING them, not e-mailing them. Even if the move is temporary, it won't matter. DirecTV doesn't care about anything address related provided you are paying your bill on time.
As long as you have a dish that gets the local broadcasts in the area you want to move to, then you will have no issue (assuming that there are local broadcasts in the area you want to move to).
I would say that you really don't need to discuss the duration of the move you are proposing when talking to DirecTV. If you do discuss it too much, you may be suggesting to them that you should be paying for service in two locations (two accounts) when you really don't need to.

If your vacation home is in an area outside your local spot beam (say moving from Virginia to Mississippi) are you able to switch to a different locale to get their locals?
ETA: Won't matter anyway, after checking DirecTV's site I won't be in anyone's spot beam. :( Does anyone have a current map of local channel spot beams? Trying some zip codes nearby (<30-50 miles) showed they were able to get DirecTV locals. :(

The temporary move next winter will be from Indianapolis to Naples Florida. I looked up our address in Naples and the Local channels are available (mainly Fort Myers Local network stations). So I should just call before we leave later this year and tell them to change our service address to the Naples Florida location but leave our billing address (on autopay) the same and not specify a length of time? Thanks

ThanksIs there a dish at the new location? Won't you have to tell D* you're moving to get one installed there? In which case, shouldn't they require the billing address and service address be the same? I'm confused. /steve
