View Full Version : Reasons to Upgrade TTG to Latest Version
For the longest time I have hung on to TTG v2.0 - why because the functionlaity it offered was suffucient and it did not include some of the silliness of interfering with other programs that TTG did not think I should be using....
I see the latest version 2.3 with a Beta of 2.4
Can I upgrade without loosing key features that are avialable to me now
Should I upgrade - what do I get by moving from v2.0 to v2.3 or even v2.4?
Thanks,

One big reason to upgrade is because they removed the stupid password prompt every time you play a file. As for the transcoder blocks, like the one for Windows Media Encoder, there are ways around that. Heck there is a program out there now that can strip TiVo's encryption completely, so you can get around any block they put on their DirectShow filter with a simple download.

Thanks Dan - I am skirting around the specifics so as not to fall foul of the regulations on this board
Just so as I am clear.....
I believe this is what I use but given the constant fihgt and the change to the more recent versions that block specific programs I was concerned that they had blocked this activity or changed the encryption so this particular tool no loner works
But based on your response this tool will still work no matte what version of TTG you use.
Is that correct?
Thanks for your advice/help

There is really no way TiVo could ever block it. The way they block Windows Media Encoder is by checking the name of the executable that is invoking the TiVo filter and refusing if it's Windows Media Encoder. For 3rd party programs like the one you're referring to all they would have to do if TiVo did decide to block them is change the name of the application and it would work again. Not to mention that TiVo's encryption scheme has been broken now, via tivodecode, so even if they do block a specific program there will still be other ways around it.
And you don't have to worry about them changing the encryption scheme to get around it either. The encryption mechanism they use is hardware based, so it can't be changed on the fly. The best they could do is build a future model of the TiVo with a different type of encryption chip. Which they're not going to do unless forced to because to be honest TiVo doesn't really care about encryption. The only reason they do anything at all is because they have content partners that they need to appease, so as long as they don't complain TiVo wont care.
