i activated an HR10-250 before the HD access fee was imposed, so I'm currently not paying it (and of course, not getting any HD programming from DirecTV, the only HD programming I do get is OTA). however, once in a while I do see worthwhile programming on the DirecTV HD channels. Before the HD access fee, it was possible to add and remove the HD channels, just like any other programming option; the amount you were charged was prorated by how long you had the option active. Is this still the case for someone like me who's not mandated to pay the HD access fee?

If you want HD you get the whole package. No single channel. I think Directv is trying to halt this practice of starting a channel for a few days and then turning it off.
I for one think its bad form to turn on a movie channel for one night just to watch something like the Sapranos. Suck it up and pay for the month at least.
You will only get good programming if you help support the networks who produce it.

I can't answer your question about the HD pack, but with the movie channels you now have to keep them for at least 30 days - no prorating for a day.

hmm, not quite what I was asking. in fact, I don't mind paying the entire HD access fee for a month. I just want to know if I can quit it after a month, or am I stuck with it from that point forward?

I think the only way you'll know for sure is to call DirecTV.

And even then, because it's DirecTV, you won't know for sure. Just keep calling back until you get the answer that you want.

If you activated your HR10 today, you would have to pay the HD access fee if you wanted service using a HR10 (or any hi-def receiver). You can't opt out of it (from what I understand) - any hi-def receiver must pay the HD access fee now.
By adding the HD access fee, you would be changing your TV package. I do not think you could go back to your old package without the HD access fee (as it doesn't exist for new customers - only people who were grandfathered).

If you have an HR10-250, regardless of whether or not you want to have HD access, you will pay the HD fee. I had HD access off when the rules changed so I am not paying the HD fee, but still get the premium movie channels in HD. If I were to do anything now to change my account, then the HD access fee would appear on my bill because I am using an HR10-250.

I just added HD access to my account this week where before I just used OTA for my channels on my HR10-250. I am hoping to remove that option in a month or so. Since I have no rush to remove it today I am not 100% sure it will remove ok. But from the Directv setup it looks like I could remove it.

I had my HR10-250 activated before the change as well. I did have the Premium Package with No HD access. I got HBO and Showtime HD also. I have since lowered my service to the Family Package and Sports Pack only and they do not charge me an HD access fee. Maybe it is because I have had the HR10 for over a year, but again No Access fee after I made the change.
