Ever since the software update that fixed the screw up with recording and then not being able to transfer videos, every so often the TiVo changes channels (Season Passes) to the wrong channel. Why, oh why, is it doing this?

This is a common problem. See the thread here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128743) for setup and tips.

For what it's worth, I haven't had a missed change since I started using the "C" variant of the code.

Thanks for the pointer. I did look at the page,
but my Motorola actually accepts the cable
from the TiVo instead of IR, so I'm thinking
the issue might be the the software version
noted by manduck. You know anything about
this?

So what is the version number of your code? I'm
thinking if my Series 2 540 TiVo doesn't have this
version, perhaps I need to have them force an
update. Don't know precisely what the C variant
refers to, but it sounds like it might be the solution
I need.

What I was referring to was the IR code in your channel changing settings. Go to Messages and Settings/Settings/Channels/Channel Changing. From there go to advanced setup. There you will see something like "IR Code: 00093-A" (for example). Mine was 00093-B and it didn't change channels reliably. I changed it to 00093-C and it has worked fine since (knock wood). My understanding is that A means normal speed, B means fast and C means slow.

This support page explains how to do it: Advanced Troubleshooting for Channel Changing with IR Control (http://customersupport.tivo.com/LaunchContent.aspx?CID=64d126aa-d31d-4613-9a16-3d32477bcd09) (Scroll down to where it says "I have already completed Guided Setup").

I have a theory, more of a guess really, that when you use variant B, the Tivo won't change channels if it already thinks it is on the correct channel, while if you use variant C it will change channels regardless. I'm not sure about that though.

Whoops, I didn't notice that you were using the serial interface for channel changing. My solution is for the IR method.

I am also having this problem, with serial interface. Tried to record Grey's Anatomy and got a very interesting documentary about Pink Floyd and Dark Side of the Moon instead!

Well, there is the potential for something good from this situation, but overall I'd prefer having the channel change work as programmed. It's so rare that I can almost live with it, particularly if I can view a missed episode online -- and yet, there's no reason for this kind of problem to occur given the simplicity of this bit of technology.

I've also had problems with channel-changing since the service update. I even switched to the "C" (slow) channel changing option, but have still seen the TiVo miss-change the channel, apparently by dropping the first number - for example, it tries to change to channel 136, but misses the "1" and gets the channel changed to 36 instead.

This is with Comcast using the IR blasters against a Motorola box (DCT700).
