View Full Version : Could Tivo have broken my TV?

I only recently got Tivo. My parents are technophobes and wary of me getting it. After successfully setting it up, my mother was relieved when I told her she could just bypass using it, and stick to using the cable remote entirely as she was used to. This was two days ago.

Today she calls me over because the cable remote isn't changing channels properly. I used the cable remote, and although the channel #'s changed on the cable box, the image on screen wouldn't move. When I tried the Tivo remote though, it changed the channel fine. I was in the process of trying to figure out why the cable remote would no longer change channels, when suddenly the sound on the TV gives out and starts blaring nothing but dull static.

Long story short, I can't get the TV to give out any sound anymore other than static, or nothing (when on mute). I connected another TV in the house to the cable box, and it's displaying the image fine, giving sound fine, and also changing channels with the cable remote as well as the Tivo remote.

The TV having problems with sound is an old Proscan TV that has already been giving problems for nearly two years. I've been telling her to replace it but she doesn't want to spend the money. As I've already mentioned, both of my parents are both technophobes who refused to let me connect a game console to this particular TV because they think a PS2 or Xbox 360 will somehow break the TV. Now two days after I connect a Tivo to the thing the sound gives out. I'm sure you can imagine what conclusion they'll jump to as to what caused the problem...

Is it possible Tivo somehow caused or contributed to the TV's sound giving out? Why would the cable remote have ceased to be able to change the channel?

The old TV is a Proscan PS27600 btw.

I'm using the typical Tivo/DVD/TV setup found on the Tivo website. (sorry I can't link yet as I have less than 5 posts).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Why would the cable remote have ceased to be able to change the channel?

If you try and change the channel with the cable remote with the Tivo connected there will be noticeable delay (2-3 seconds). That is because the Tivo is buffering the video. But the channel should still change.

The rest of it... I got nothing for ya.

No, the TiVo could not have broken the TV set.

If you bypass the TiVo entirely and the TV still won't play sound from the cable box, and it's all hooked up correctly, the TV just wore out. Bad timing, I suppose, but more than likely it's just not hooked up right.

Nice troubleshooting. Time for a new TV.
