Okay, this episode isn't over yet, but....
I'm confused. When did we learn what the device does? Did I forget some of the previous episode? The episode starts with the assumption that we know what's going on....
and I don't. :(

I had exactly the same feeling, that I had missed an episode..
especially since there was no mention of what happened to Daniel until midway in.
very very strange cold start to the episode.

I agree about the start of the ep.
Overall it was OK though. I was glad the guy wasnt able to phase into their dimension.

I too was also confused at the start of the episode and went onlne to check and make sure that I didn't miss an episode.

the confusion isn't about how they figured out what the device does...assuming enough time elapsed, it's not outside Sam's capabilities to figure it out...the confusion I had is that they had the device in the first place...the Orisi beamed into the lab and took Daniel...why in the world would she leave the device -- what she was after in the first place -- behind?
this is the only device that could stop the Ori...and she just left it and took Daniel?
too absurd...unless I missed something, it's just too absurd!

The device they were using was the one Merlin used to hide his work on the original Holy Grail, not the new Holy Grail that they were making during the previous episode.

You're mixing up your Merlin devices.
The device they played with in this episode is one they found months ago - that knocked Sam, or daniel, (or both?) invisible and out of phase for a while back at the SGC. There was a ancient computer terminal that could only be used when out of phase, and it contained Merlins research. It's from many episodes back.
It is *not* the ancient destroying weapon they were hunting for in the last two episodes.

Thank you! They need to come up with better names than 'device'. I guess this phasing thing is a 'device', while the thing Daniel was working on was a 'weapon'? Sheesh.
Other than that, it was an ok episode. I liked how Vala's husband woke up a bit and argued with the Prior (not that it did any good, which is about par for the course, even in our reality).

So what could the producers have clipped from this episode to give us what once was a routine "previously on" segment?

yep...clearly mixed up devices...didn't recall the older device at all...thanks for clearing this up...
Once again, Vala proves herself invaluable to the team

This entire episode was poorly done and very poorly acted from the get go. I felt like I was watching "Wormhole Extreme" most of the time.
I've watched and loved this show since the very first episode aired on Showtime but it's long past the point they should have pulled the plug. With the departure of RDA and Don S. Davis, among others, the "magic" that was SG-1 is long lost.

Huh. I thought Sam's acting was top notch. She really looked like she was fearing for her life.

Show is still good, IMHO. I enjoy the heck out of it. SGA can just collapse back under the ocean though.

That device is from last season's "Arthur's Mantle."

It took me a few minutes to recall the older device as well. This ep really required a "previously on Stargate SG-1" pre-roll.
It was nice to see Toman again, though he seemed to swing way too quickly from killing the villagers involved in the "resistance" to wanting to save the entire village.

I don't think so...we know him as a decent man and he clearly was conflicted throughout the ep, but trying to keep a stoic appearance...it was not sudden at all, IMO...

The episode was alright. I think Amanda Tapping did an admirable job of being close to death.
I too was confused about the Merlin device they were using at the beginning but the reminder above has cleared that up for me.

Yeah, agreed.
Until reading this thread I didn't even remember that the device from this episode was used to access the out of phase computer terminal.
I had theorized that it was somehow linked to how Merlin hid the caverns in England (from Avalon 1 & 2) and was wondering why they'd use something we'd never specifically seen before.
Probably wouldn't have been so confusing without that SciFi mid-season pause giving you time to forget the details.

So what could the producers have clipped from this episode to give us what once was a routine "previously on" segment?
Well there clearly was a lot of time devoted to showing the conflict between the village leader and guy who was willing to submit to survive. They could have sclaed that back some and still had the right impact. Also about 10 or more villagers had time on screen getting shot during the pitched battle. They could have cut some of that down.
I think they are suffering from "last few episodes-itis" and are having a harder time editing people off the screen in order to make a tighter story. I liked the episode but parts of it got a little long in the first 30 minutes.
But in the end when you had Mitchell and Sam discussing their idea of God and Vala and Toman discussing the Ori way coupled with the Prior telling Tamon not to question him - that was the kind of story line that puts the thinking cap on

Ok, I'm really confused now that I caught up. I definitely got the feeling I missed an episode here where they finished/tested the device and "lost" daniel.
Then I went online and found there was an episode called shroud which is numbered right BEFORE this episode(this one is #14) but not scheduled to air until next week 5/4. It was titled Shroud and numbered #13.
I searched online but didn't immediately find a reference to the episodes being aired out of order.
No one else caught this?

Wait, did some people see the episode that was supposed to be before this one "Shroud" and others not???
Nothing I recorded(and an SG1 was recorded each week) ever showed Daniel being taken or the device being finished.

Read my post, they have clearly screwed with the order (which was the point of my post, not asking about the device particularly) of these episodes considering
1. You go into this episode with NO idea what happened to daniel (at least according to what aired on DTV here)
2. The episode numbers are out of order according to the SCIFI website
Hmm, after reading an online synopsis I see daniel was captured during Quest (I'm assuming part 2)? Neither my wife nor I remember this.
And also where is episode #12 according to the SciFi website? Someone online posted about them changing episode orders to change/improve the arc.
Overall this episode was very confusing to go into as most here noticed.

At the very end of part 2, Daniel used the "powers" bestowed on him by Merlin to hold Adria at bay while the rest of SG-1 escaped through the Stargate. He had said "I'll be right behind you" but never came through.

I don't know if it's the case here, but it's not at all uncommon to shoot episodes out of order for various reasons (lead time for FX, cast availability, common sets, etc.). And when they do, the production codes go by the order they're made in, not the order they're meant to be shown in.

at the end of the ep...when they jumped through the gate and Daniel stayed back to fight the Orisi...the last 10 seconds showed the Orisi on her ship going into one of the rooms (they never seem to keep their prisoners in cells, rather, they're in posh rooms!) and Daniel was there...they talked for 2 seconds then fade to black...
now you're making me doubt my memory...did I imagine this

Hmm, that I don't remember so either it cut off (I usually notice this) or we didn't watch all the way to the end (unusual) or I plain forgot. (oh yeah, or you're crazy :))

He said that all the memories that Merlin had given him had gone, leaving a really bad hangover. She said she didn't believe him.

this is so funny, glad you all had problems with keeping track too. I watched 3 eps in a row and thought i had missed an ep. Just starting off without daniel was nuts...i checked epguides and my wife assured me we had actually watched another but missed something maybe. Just so weird we all had the same issues.
