View Full Version : TiVo listing doesn't match reality for OTA HD

I have a Series 3 HD TiVo. I use it to record OTA HD (among other things). Up until a couple months ago, this has been working fine. The first sign of trouble was some of the CBS HD recordings had no content. When I went to Live TV and selected the channel (13-1 in the TiVo Guide), there was no signal. After lots of messing around with the antenna and connections, I tried the Channel Scan, which found CBS on channel 32-3 and indicated it was already in the channel list. At that point, tuning to 13-1 from the Guide worked fine and recordings worked fine.
Last week the same symptoms reappeared. This time, when I go through the Channel Scan, it finds 32-3, but indicates that it's NOT already in the channel list. I can add it to the channel list, but the Guide will list all the CBS shows on 13-1, where there is no signal and it will not list any shows on 32-3 (it says "To Be Announced") where the actual signal is. Throughout all of this, the HD tuner in my TV was always able to receive CBS on 32-3, so I have no reason to think the local broadcast has changed. Other OTA HD signals (NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS, etc.) have had no problems. One other curious thing: if I use the TiVo's signal strength meter on 13-1, it shows no picture (screen is all gray) but indicates it has acquired a digital signal and reports a signal strength of about 80. 32-3 behaves similarly, except there is a picture there.

It seems that a couple months ago, I was able to convince the TiVo that 32-3 and 13-1 are the same, but it's not working that way any more, and I'm out of ideas ... any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

That's unusual, but I guess not impossible.

My local PBS station switched from UHF 55 to UHF 50 a few months ago (WHYY). ChanScan found it, added it to the list, but didn't have any guide info. I sent an update note to TiVo.

They did correct it, but it didn't line up for me until I re-ran Guided Setup.

So that's my advice. Run Guided Setup.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Guided Setup did not solve the problem. I re-did the Channel Scan afterwards and this time it does not find 32-3, so I'm not sure what that means.

You mentioned that you sent an update note to TiVo. Is there a special address for that, or do I just send it to the support address?

You can do that here:

http://customersupport.tivo.com/Lineupform.aspx

In my case it was an obvious something-needed-updating in their database issue. Yours, I'm not sure -- it seems kinda fuzzy between a lineup issue vs. "something weird". You might want to contact Customer Support directly and discuss it with them.

Actually, before you do that, you might want to head over to http://www.avsforum.com/ and check the "Local HDTV Info and Reception" section for your city. This might be something wonky with your local CBS that others have encountered and they might have some advice/experience.

Once again, thanks. I checked out avsforum for my local area and found others have had similar problems with CBS, so it looks like a local broadcast problem rather than a TiVo problem.

Ah good, always nice to be able to assign blame to the rightful guilty party!

Glad I could be of assistance!
