I just switched from a TiVo to direct tv HD-DVR. While I love the HD clarity, I can no longer receive the captions on ABC, FOX, and occasionally CBS. Has anyone else noticed this? I've relied on this feature since the early '90s and never had a problem!

Direct TV was notified, but they don't seem to have any answers, and haven't fixed anything. Help!

FYI - the menu setup is coded for captions ON, as I get them on other channels.

Do you have a HR10 or a HR20? Since you say "direct tv HD-DVR" I assume you have a HR20. The HR20 is not a TiVo. The HR20 is discussed at http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=112 and has several threads on closed captioning.

CC does not tolerate compression very well, which is why servers that MPEG-encode video typically go out of their way to NOT compress that part of the signal. I have a sneaking suspicion that with all of the severe compression DTV seems to feel the need to do, that they are applying at least some compression to ancillary data as well (where CC lives), which could be why you and many others are seeing this.
