View Full Version : Where's the sticky with the newbie guide(s) and how about a comparison??

Hey all,

Wow things change a lot and quick around here. While I'm not a true newbie because I've upgraded over a dozen Tivo's since the first S1-14Hr, the long gaps between upgrades makes me feel a bit new every time. It's been about 18 months since the last one so there's much catching up... again.

The first thing I've noticed is there's no sticky right at the top pointing you to the how-to guide + software to do a quick and easy upgrade (just bought a refurb DT and a DB35 750 GB HD for the occasion).

It'd also be nice if there would be one sticky with all the various software options (or at least links to the threads) and perhaps some breakdown and/or comparison of the above... That would help choose among the many, eh?

Lastly, 2 side questions:
1) Has anyone solved the problem of being able to upgrade from Single A to (larger) Single A only once? (at least without some serious hacking of partitions, etc.)
2) What about the problem with the transfer of discontinued shows no longer ending up in a group after xfer onto a brand new Tivo.

Thanks in advance! I'd love to remove this post once there's some sort of all-in-one newbie compilation.

Thanks!
-Jason

Mr. Bott believed the old stickies that you are referring to were old, outdated and not used very much so he unstuck them, but they are still around somewhere. You just have to search.

Okay... so what's your quicky recommendation (& Link) on a straight up A drive upgrade for a S2 DT (from 80 GB to 750 GB).

(I've been reading some mention of InstantCake which I've not used before... any thoughts?)

Thanks!

Well, I performed my last few upgrades using this:

http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/step4.php

I thought it was simple and straight forward but if someone has a good reason to use another method, please let me know.

If they all end up with the same result, then I'm happy to stay with the tried and true. My only big motivators for change would be if there's an upgrade method that will allow a future A drive update again.

Thanks!

I've done some more poking around and found this:

http://www.mfslive.org/tivofaq.htm

It seems to imply that using their software will allow me later on to upgrade the drive again? It's a S2-DT that I'm upgrading from the stock 80 GB to a 750 and maybe a few years down the line I can upgrade it again to a larger drive size?

This is what you want. I successfully upgraded an already upgraded drive with this -- keeping the current recordings. Worked like a charm. However, I believe spike2k5 took the CD image with the -F option off of the site -- you'll have to contact him directly to get it. See this thread (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=327239) for more info.
