Are the two spot beam satellites MPEG-4 only or can MPEG-2 receivers get HD Locals off the spot beam for a short period of time. I know that the two new birds will be MPEG-4 and require H-20 or HR-20, but I have a HR10-250. It would seem that the older spot beam satellites would have both formats. This could buy me a little time, based on how long it's taking Dtv to through up there new birds.

HD Locals are MPEG-4 only except for the NYC and LA markets. There are locals provided in MPEG-2 by spot beams, but those are standard-def only.

The new birds are Ka band, and the HR10 cannot tune them. They transmit MPEG4 video, which the HR10 cannot decode. The old spot beam satellites are normal Ku with MPEG2 SD locals.

I get the CBS NY feed and it is HD. I'm in South Florida with an approved waiver

As I said, NYC (at least the major networks) are MPEG2. I get ABC and FOX in HD.

As mentioned that is because you are getting the NY HD feed. NY and LA network HD feeds are available for those that qualify for them. Those are in mpeg-2. If you are not in those 2 cities and are getting your locals in HD then you are getting them in mpeg-4.

Can anyone direct me to an MPEG4 spotbeam map?

Here's one more question. I live within the Santa Barbara Feed area and we have no locals in HD and from what I have read here I would assume if I ever get them, they will be Mpeg-4 and off a spot beam, until the new birds go up. All wavers are denied for a LA feed all the time.

Is OTA (antenna) an option for you? I have family in Arroyo Grande that used to get locals using rabbit ears.

Thanks for asking. OTA is the only thing going in this area. My back yard looks like a cell tower. NBC and CBS come in very good. ABC at 63 miles, I get about 95% of the time but I am using a 4228 and a DB-4 coupled together to get it. I could be one of very few watching ABC in HD in San Luis Obispo, or the only one.

If you get them from D* then your assumption is right, they would be in mpeg-4. Are you saying that your city has no HD locals or you just can't get them? If you have trouble with HD channels OTA is cable an option for you?

Just read the SLO thread over at AVS and can see you have been posting there. It is obvious you have a good grasp on OTA reception. I am 60+ miles out from the LA towers, and know all about the problems you are seeing. Lucky for me I can receive the LA mpg2 broadcasts.

Thanks, but that's not what I'm looking for.

I have a friend that I'm trying to help out. He's in New Hampshire and D* thinks he lives in NYC and he gets all the NY locals up there (including MSG, YES, SNY) via MPEG2 and the HR10. He's considering getting a new D* box so he can get more HD programming, but won't dump the HR10 until he can confirm that the NYC spot beam that extends that far north on MPEG2 also does that for MPEG4. He doesn't want to lose the NYC locals (including YES, MSG, SNY) and would love to pick up YES in HD up in New Hampshire via an MPEG4 box.

Then you should visit the NY thread on the AVS Forum.
