i have an older hughes dvr40.
it was modified when i purchased it and will not make phone calls to directv.
i took my tivo unit from my old account and wanted to activate it on my new account.
the problem is directv has told me i must get a different access card and the receiver will not allow directv to pair the new card.
the receiver is stuck on the old card and directv said that card cannot be activated again. (swapped out)
how can i fix the receiver?
would buying a new replacement drive work?

Since it was "modified" to not make calls, you might check at
the Forums for DTivo Hacking, Upgrades, and Networking to
see if there is any information about why a new card is not
recognized/activated in the unit

This has nothing to do with the TiVo or the drive or phone calls. Access card pairing is entirely on the DirecTV receiver side of things.
You need to escalate the issue with DirecTV.

Try playing CSR roulette and call back and try with a different CSR some people have been lucky and got them to do it.

It has nothing to do with tivo or the phone call issue. it is to do with Directv.
Any Receiver can be paired with a New Card. Some of the CSR's will tell you NO it is impossible, but just stick at it. Phone them again and eventually you will get it activated.
There may be One issue tho, I do not know about the Hughes DVR40, but some of the older receiver do not accept the New access cards. This may be the issue in this case, but you never know your luck.

Remember the CSRs usually work the same shift so try calling at a different time (later in the evening is usually better). :)

I just moved my subbed card from my old R10 (the one DirecTV "gave" me) to a Philips DSR7000 that I bought used so I could hack. When I called, I got someone that was presumably from the Western Hemisphere (lucky this time) who had no problem in sending the command to allow the card to marry to the receiver.
They should do it for you no problem

when I add receivers, I "fail to mention" that I don't use a phone line. If and when they ask if you have one hooked up...YOU SAY YES! :p
