View Full Version : Drive copying problems

I'm posting this here because the Upgrade Center doesn't seem to be very active.

I used MFSLive 1.0 to upgrade two HR10-250 units to 750GB Seagate DB35 drives. I followed option 1.2 from this page (http://www.mfslive.com/softwareguide.htm). My software is version 6.3c (unhacked).

The first unit was up and running yesterday, and everything appeared to be fine. This morning, the channel list suddenly was reset. (All of the channels were marked as received and my favorites were cleared.)

Meanwhile, I'd just finished upgrading the other box. As I was testing it out, the live TV picture froze and none of the buttons on the remote control or front panel would work. The only solution was to pull the plug. After rebooting, I viewed a recording (copied over from the original drive). Once again, the machine locked up and had to be unplugged. Upon rebooting, I was able to watch the remainder of the show (though I had to fast-forward from a seemingly random spot).

What should I do? Any advice will be sincerely appreciated. Thanks!

As a follow-up, the first box (the one for which the channel list was reset) restarted itself this afternoon. That can't be good.

The weirdness continues. On unit #1, the DirecTV account status suddenly changed to "account closed," so the box wouldn't allow any recordings to be scheduled. Only a complete restart changed it back to "account in good standing."

Then when I walked back into the room with unit #2, it had placed itself in standby mode (from which it exited normally).

What the heck is going on? Are these seemingly random occurrences symptomatic of a particular issue?

Probably won't get much help here. No hacking talk, including hard drive upgrades. Sorry...

I could try the Upgrade Center again, but I received no help there when I inquired about a related problem.

Your upgrade command used the full potential of both 750GB drives. This made your total MFS size greater than MFSTools can handle, possible greater than MFS can handle.

When I hit this problem, I just used a 750GB and a 300GB (or was it 400GB?) drive combination. No more problem.

You probably need to increase your swap size when going to a drive that big. I had weird problems with one of my HR10-250 with two 300 Gig drives. One of the suggestions I got was to increase the swap size from 128 to 256. I had to restore the drive again, but it solved the problems. Change the "-s 128" to "-s 256".

I was hoping that these problems stemmed from something along those lines. (It seemed unlikely that I would have received two defective drives). I'll try re-copying and report back.

Thanks again for your help! :D

Just upgraded stock 250GB to 750GB Seagate. Almost full stock drive. Took about 7 hours. I followed the instructions (including downloading the weaknees modified MFS tools for larger drives support) generated from here:

http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php

Upgraded drive booted fine and all my shows were preserved. HD time increased to 96 HD hours.

Upgraded drive booted fine and all my shows were preserved. HD time increased to 96 HD hours. Now I'm confused. The instructions from that site appear to specify a swap size of 127. I was under the impression that this was supposed to be 256.

I also don't understand what the practical difference is between the WeaKnees boot disc and the one that I've been using. (I do see that the image is more than twice the size.) I already was able to detect the drives' full capacities (and my units also report an HD capacity of 96 hours).

If anyone can help me to sort all of this out, I'd sincerely appreciate it. I hope to re-copy the drives tomorrow.

In this post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4591511#post4591511), the author of MFSLive (the boot CD that I've been using) appears to recommend a swap file size of 360MB when upgrading to a 750GB drive. Given some of the other comments from that thread, I'm inclined to stick with MFSLive and follow those instructions (unless there's some reason why I shouldn't).

I actually used the WeaKnees instructions and CD but I used 256 for the swap size for 600 Gig drive space in my HR10-250. If someone is suggesting 360 meg swap space for a 750 Gig drive based on their experience, then that is probably what you should use. The additional 100 meg of space will only cost you a few minuets of record time.
