Can you replace the DVD drive on these things?. Mine seems to be fried as it is not recognizing any discs. This all started with those Sony discs but now it won't recognize anything. Disc Error.

How would I go about it?

There have been 16 views of your post already. I am surprised no one has pointed you to the thread with the answer to this question on the very same page. Since I have not yet made 5 posts to this board it will not let me post the actual link.

Seems like the thread you pointed to talks about replacement *hard* drives. Can the DVD-ROM be replaced by an off the shelf one. (Based on other threads, the Humax can).

I did a little further research on this and it seems you can get a replacement DVD drive for about $100 from a couple of different websites. I'll probably see if I can get an old unit that isn't working and take the drive out of that and see if i can swap them successfully. Be a shame to buy a whole new DVD player since I bought this thing specifically to kill two birds with one stone - DVD player and TIVO combined.

Reviving this old thread. The DVD drive on my SD-H400 is getting old. It starts skipping when it reaches the outer edge of the disc - I think the laser source is getting weak. I tried different tricks, including adjusting the spring-loaded rail, tapes on dvd, etc to no avail. It would work if I put a very light finger pressure on the outer edge the disc, but that's a terrible way to watch :).

Has anyone been able to find a replacement? I think it's a Mitsumi drive or such (can't remember on top of my head and I already closed the box).

Edit: DVD Assembly - Part # P000386650 - $120 ouch! Does anyone know of any old Toshiba players that use the same drive assembly?
