We have a TIVO Series 2 (service number begins with a 140).
The other night the unit was unresponsive to commands from the remote. Live TV was coming through, but pushing any button on the remote generated the "thump (kettle drum)" sound. It would not display TIVO Central and none of the other buttons affected the live TV on the screen.
I powered down the unit and let it re-boot. It came up "clean" and functioned properly for about 24 hours after which the same scenario repeated itself.
Any ideas as to what the cause might be?
Thanks,
Rich

There are two or three other threads on the same subject. You are not alone. For me the problem started with 8.1 software. Maybe the ongoing 8.3 upgrade will fix it?.....
Or maybe not.
Edit:
It doesn't happen that often for me - maybe 4 times in the last month.

And just exactly what does this have to do with your choice for the subject line "TIVO Doesn't Time Shift"????

My wife "time shifts" by hitting the pause and stopping live TV. That button will NOT work when the unit is in this state. The live TV just plays on.
She now tells me that this is occurs after she has made a selection in the guide and goes to make another one. She is thrown out of the guide and the rest is as described orginally.

Did you try replacing the batteries in your TiVo remote? If not, they may be marginal and thus causing the erratic response.
