I acquired DirecTV DVR R10 from a friend who was moving and did not need the box any longer. What I am wondering is and it may be a pretty dumb question, but is there any way to use the Tivo functionality of this box without have current direcTV service?

Without DirecTV service you will only be able to play back recordings that are currently on the unit. To record anything you will have to have DirecTV.

Rminsk is correct. It is not just a hackable software issue either. The unit is designed, primarily, as a Directv receiver with DVR services for the signal it receives. The benefit, if you did have Directv, is that the recording is lossless. There are no analog to digital to analog converters in the unit.

Sorry.

There are no analog to digital to analog converters in the unit.Small nitpick. There's most definitely is digital to analog (i.e. the MPEG decoder) or it wouldn't be able to play the recordings.

The point dtremain is trying to make is that there is NO loss in recording quality. The Directv/Tivo units get their broadcasts in Digital, and record using Digital.

Using a SA Tivo unit, the recordings are broadcast in Digital, but recorded on the Tivo as Analog. Therefore you do lose a little quality.

All the reason to use an all in one Directv/Tivo unit instead of a SA Tivo.

Of ocurse the digital signal is converted to analog to be viewed. There's just not an analog to digital recorder. Nitpick, indeed.
