Which One Is Better: R10 or Hughes SD-DVR80

I need to give roommates two of my DVRs.

I have a SAT-T60 which I will be giving to one roommate.

But I also have a R10 and a DVR80.

which one is faster on the menus?

which one is better overall or maybe performance wise?

im just not sure of the differences except that the R10 is much newer or course because the DVR80 was made a long time ago.

thanks

Performance-wise the R10 and DVR80 are the same.

The R10 is newer, The SD-DVR80 is easier to modify or hack.

thanks for the super fast info. very much appreciated more then you know.

that goes for anybody else replying as well. you guys really help a lot!

besides those questions, a side question is what does the daily call do for the sat-t60, r10, and hughes sd-dvr80? is it for programming data or does that come from the sat?

ill have to hook up phone lines into all of the rooms unless i can get around that or dont need it. any idea?

Phone call is for software updates(the recent one was for the daylight saving change, Software updates are not very often) or Pay-Per-View movies, If no phone line is plugged in you just get a nag message that you just delete, or hack the unit with a fakecall program. No phone line is needed for normal day-to-day operation.
Programming data comes from the satellite.

oh ok and the r10 cant be hacked easily but the hughes sd-dvr80 can be from what ive read.

regarding updates for r10 or the hughes box i wonder if i shouldnt let it do any updates to the software at all. ive read things about the updates being slow and problematic but cant recall what version and which unit. anybody know?

If you do not update to the current software, and you have not hacked the box and installed a custom program element of your own, the new guide data WILL cause problems

Look at the sticky posts at the top about restarting and losing programs

For hacking information, go to
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=24

If you do not have a telephone line connected, be aware that over time enough messages will go into the message space that then trying to go read messages will cause the box to freeze... so either delete the messages every week, or NEVER go to messages

I'd keep the one with the least hours on it merely because, odds are, the disk drive will last longer.

Keep the Hughes. I'd even take the hughes with a dead disk over the R10. 80GB hard drives are nearly worthless now anyway, when you can get 250GB disks for $50

R10's have slower usb network performance. They require a modified eprom to hack. Not all hacks support them (e.g. bufferhack...I do sorely miss that one). Since they're more difficult to hack, there's less people hacking them, and therefore a longer wait for updated hacks following a software update (anyone seen the superpatch for 6.1a yet?).

About the only thing the R10 has got up on other DTivos, imo, is they have the most aesthetically pleasing exterior case design, which really doesn't mean much. After all, I bought my Tivo's so I could look at the programming they put on the tv, not the tivo itself.

Keep the Hughes over the R10. The R10 is the worst model Directv/Tivo to hack.

The only real use of the phone lines now is for PPV ordering. All guide Data and Updates now go thru the Sat.

As for the R10 being the most aesthetically pleasing, I prefer my DSR6000. The Black unit matches every thing else :D
