I'm new to DirecTV (Got it installed in December) and the installer installed two multiswitches in series which look something like this:

Click here if it doesn't display (http://www.dishstore.net/images/DSC00453.JPG)

I have three DVRs running off of these (two R15s and a HDVR2). I also have a standard receiver which the HDVR2 replaced. I'd like to hook up the standard receiver, as well as have capacity for another one or two standard receivers. Can I add a third multiswitch in series, or am I better off replacing the two existing with one larger one? Any particular brands to avoid/buy?

Thanks!

I would think you could probably just add another multiswitch of the same kind...but I'm the type that is always thinking of future expansion so I'd get a Zinwell wb68 multiswitch to replace your others. It runs between $50-$100 and would set you up with what you have plus a couple of extra outputs. If I'm looking at it right, you could do your 3 DVR's plus 2 regular receivers...or a 4th DVR. Plus this multiswitch is KU/KA signal capatible if you ever want HD down the road.

I've got a wb68...plus 2 of the ones like yours in my system...I have 4 DVR's and 2 regular receivers.

DirecTV will always install multiswitches (free) to handle the number of receiver ports required. Why your previous installer didn't use a 3x8 switch is a mystery. Simply ask for DirecTV install service and see what they say.

If you are not actually using the antenna input, you might look for

I use one at my house... dual lnb input and 12 outputs... 2 lines to 6 rooms

Instead of running them in series, connect them in parallel. That will allow you a total of 8 outputs. If you need more, then you can swap one of the switches for a larger one.

I havent found that to be true.. directv put in one 3x4 multiswitch on the install and they would not comeback and upgrade when i added my 3-4-5 dvr to the mix.. they wouldnt even send me the equipment to save them the install. I went the cheaper way and added a 2nd dish, it shortened the run to parts of the house and i didnt need to get an expensive 16 output multiswitch..

To expand on the parallel suggestion. Buy two high frequency splitters that pass power on one leg. Connect them to the two outputs of your dish. Then connect the outputs to the two multiswitches keeping the connections consistent. This will give you 8 lines instead of the two you have now. But, it looks like you might need >8. :)
