View Full Version : Phillips DSR704 won't start

I've had a Phillips DSR704 for quite some time and have been very happy with it. A couple of weeks ago I started having problems with the 30 minute buffer. If we were watching a show that was in the 30 minute buffer and were anywhere but the current time the picture would flicker and then we'd be at the current time. We could rewind back to where we were but the same would happen.

My wife called Directv for support and apparently didn't do anything other than unplug the unit. When she plugged the unit back in nothing happened. None of the lights on the front come on. I can hear the fan and what sounds like the hard drive start. The light on the digital audio out, in the back of the unit, comes on.

Directv sent me a R15 unit and we really are unhappy with it. Directv suggested we purchase another Tivo unit. Before we do that, what can I do to troubleshoot what is wrong? I swapped the original drive out for a larger one right after I purchased it and I've considered putting that original back in but considering that nothing happens when I plug it in I assume this would be futile.

Thanks for your help!

Most likely it's a dead hard drive. I'd suggest swapping drives like you mentioned.

does the "Welcome....powering up" come on? If not even that comes on...you've got something else wrong. It's been my impression that the "welcome....powering up" screen is run by the motherboard and then it boots into the HD. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Otherwise I agree with DKerr...put your original drive in it and see what happens.

Nope, no "Welcome....powering up" or anything else. I'll try putting the hard drive in tonight and see what happens.

Thanks!

Well, I installed the other hard drive and nothing changed. When I had the lid off I noticed that the fan starts when plugged in but the hard drive does not. I tried pushing the buttons on the front and nothing happens at all...

Is this a dead unit? If so, any recommendations as to which model to purchase and where to purchase from?

Thanks,
Qwinn

Probably a dead power supply. You can buy replacements from Weaknees.

You're best source for another DirecTV/Tivo is eBay. Just be sure to buy from reputable sellers that provide the DVR's "Receiver ID Number" so that you can verify its account status before you buy it. Some sellers are trying to sell leased equipment, or equipment with outstanding account bills, and buyers then have a very difficult time activating them on their account.

Would the even the fan come on if it was the power supply? I've never had the pleasure yet so I wouldn't know. Either way, I agree with litzdog....last dart you could throw is a power supply. After that...it's off to Ebay. Sorry!
