I have a HR10-250 and have seen a lot of posts about recent crashes, screen freezes, automatic reboots, etc. My box is doing the same and it has gotten to the point that is no longer useful. I've tried resetting the box, restarting the box, and adjusting the HD resolutions. It'll work for a while and then go back to its bad habits.

The wife and kids like and are used to the TIVO interface. I know that the new DirecTV hd box dumps TIVO in favor of what I understand is a lousy new interface.

So, the issue is this. Do I just upgrade to the new DirecTV HD dvr and make everyone learn the new interface, hoping that DirecTV will eventually improve it.

Alternatively, I suppose I could get a DirecTV HD receiver (not a dvr) and then buy the very expensive TIVO Series 3 HD dvr.

Any thoughts?

The TiVo Series 3 will not work with DirecTV. If you want a TiVo DVR for DirecTV HD, the HR10-250 is your only choice.

Buy a new HR10. There are still some sitting in warehouses. Or, give an HR20 a try. It's not a Tivo, but it's not the son of Satan, either. You might not completely hate it. (Find a store, play with one... before you get locked to 2yrs with it.)

Replacing the hard drive is another option. :)

Replacing the hard drive is another option. :)Depends on how cheap a plug-n-go pre-imaged drive costs. I got a new HR10-250 for $399. I didn't bother with the crap-shoot on eBay.

Do you mind sharing where you found one for $399? Thanks!
