View Full Version : Can I pull the hard drive out of one tivo and put it into another?
I have a series 2 140 hour tivo that I don't need any more. I just bought a dt 80 hour tivo. Is there any way to put the larger hard drive into the dt? I have never opened a tivo before and need to know if this is something that can be done by a novice? thanks

You'd have to use the software for the DT on the new drive. I assume the old one is a different model (indicated by the first three digits of the TSN). If your old system is more than a year or so old, you might be better off to buy a new drive and stick that in the DT unit, then sell or donate the old one if you no longer want it. Frys.com has a 250GB Seagate drive for $50, with no rebate.
You can find information on how to do the drive upgrade at

If you do this, I strongly suggest that you keep the original drive in a static free bag in some safe storage location. If your new drive dies, you can revert to the original or use it to create another copy.
