One of my hard drives in my DirectTivo is having intermittent problems, so I am replacing both of them. I would like to be able to retain the programs.

I did the small backup and checked to make sure it worked (it did).

So I created a boot floppy of MFSTools and hooked my drives up the way it said to in the instructions (hinsdale).

old master --> primary master
old slave --> primary slave
new master --> secondary master
new slave --> secondary slave

I booted off of the floppy. It shows the capacities right(ish).

old master= 137GB (it's actually a 160GB drive)
old slave = 120GB
new master = 137GB (it's actually a 200GB drive)
new slave = 137GB (it's actually a 200GB drive)

When I run the backup/restore

mfsbackup - Tao - /dev/hda /dev/hdb | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdc /dev/hdd

I get this:

Scanning source drive. Please wait a moment.
Source drive size is 40 hours.
- Upgraded to 147 hours.
- Upgraded to 294 hours.

Uncompressed backupsize: 245715 megabytes
Restore failed: Unable to fit backup onto drives.

The new drives are larger than the old drives. Any ideas? I would really like to retain my programs if at all possible. Should I try the ddcopy instead?

Thanks,

You need the version of LBA48 boot version of MFSTools. Or try MFSLive

Thanks, but it's too late. I had the stuff all taken apart and the contents of my Tivo upgrade stuff strewn across the living room and kitchen table, so I figured I'd continue to muck around with it.

I tried doing the ddcopy stuff. It worked on the A drive (3 hours), but I got a bunch of errors on the B drive. This wasn't surprising, because that was the drive making the heinous noises.

So I figured I had nothing to lose. I downloaded the tools from Seagate, booted to DOS and ran a check against the B drive. It found bad sectors, so I had it repair them. What the heck.

Then I did the copy again, and it finished successfully (3 hours).

So I stuck the new copies in the Tivo, and they work fine. I don't know what it's going to do when it comes across those "repaired sectors", that should be interesting. I wasn't sure if I repaired them with a DOS program what it would do. I knew I shouldn't boot Windows, but I don't know about DOS. But I had nothing to lose.

So it seems to be working.

Thanks for the advice, though, I will save it for future reference, in case my other DirecTivo has the same problem.
