I have been reading a lot of post on this site and decided to do my own S-1 upgrade. I went to DVRUpgrade.com to buy an InstantCake and found several different versions...

Sony, SVR2000 (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/category.cfm?Category_ID=5&Product_ID=0&ModelID=19&type=Model&page=cat&CFID=132491&CFTOKEN=61986440)

InstantCake for Series1 Standalone TiVo Units (download) $19.99

LBA48 Boot CD version with Enhancements (download) $4.99

Universal Boot CD Version 11 (download) $19.99

Not knowing what I was doing this confused me a little bit. I think I'm supposed to use the top one - what is this other stuff for?

I decided to look around the site and found out I could upgrade my Sony SVR 2000 (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/category.cfm?SID=1) with larger dual drives, or up to a 750g single drive. I thought that was odd as I remember reading that the SVR 2000 could only go up to a dual 160g drive. What gives? That was told to me by the people at digitalRecorder.com (http://digitalrecorder.com/main/catalog/a-SVR%202000.html?cPath=30_55&osCsid=d177e45417051fb90d41376fc0713652)

I would like to play with upgrading my own drive on this SVR. The picture will freeze and then the remote becomes unresponsive - the led's on the front still flicker when remote keys are pressed - I believe that this is a bad drive.

I want to play with some hacks and add weird stuff like caller id, is there a "TiVo hacks" for dummies book that explains different hacks? :D

I am sure that this has been covered MANY TIMES in the past - could someone lend me a hand with pointers and links?

Thank you in advance...

The Instant Cake download contains the software for your S1. It should include version 3 of the TiVo software and an LBA-48 kernel, allowing the use of drives >137GB. I upgraded a Philips S1 and the IS included the TiVoweb hacks already, plus support for the network card.

I bought a book a couple of years ago called Hacking TiVo. I understand that it contains information gleaned from this and the other TiVo forums. Whether such a book would be useful or not depends on how much time you want to spend searching.

You can also Google for the TiVowebplus web site, which has a lot of info on it. I haven't gotten around to trying it myself.
