THIS IS ESPECIALLY HELPFUL FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE SERIES 1 TIVOS. The newer series DO have ways of transferring from TIVO to PC, Series 1 doesn't.

I have been looking for a method to transfer movies/shows from my TIVO to my PC and it seems there is only one method to do it (apparently). This has probably been covered here and elsewhere, but, here it is again since I've never seen it.

Technically, this solution is very easy. The only requirement that you need to plan for is the purchase of a internal TV capable video card OR something external like the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0. I use the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0.

You will need to run a cable TV cable from your TIVO to the video card OR if you have something like the ATI TV Wonder, you can run a cable OR RCA wires in place of the cable.

To transfer a particular program or movie, you will have to re-record it using your DVR program that came with your video card software. Unfortunately, everything that you re-record will be done in real-time. That is, a 1 hour show will take 1 hour to record. :(

Before you begin the re-recording using your PC, you can set what type of media file you want your TIVO show to be saved as, ie MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4. You can then burn the saved file onto a disc to be played on a DVD player.

I save my files onto another PC connected to my TV that is running Microsoft Media Center. Then I can view the shows whenever I wish while freeing up space on my TIVO :) I don't know why I am worried about space since I have over 300 hours of recording time  Guess I just like the thought of freeing up space!

Good luck!

There are other methods, but they are forbidden discussion here.

Yes, for some obscure reason discussion of video extraction via a Cachecard using 3rd party freeware is not allowed, even though Series 2 machines have this functionality (and more) built-in

Try a google search for TiVo extraction if you wish to investigate further...;)

I stand corrected. There is another way to transfer from TiVO to PC directly, as long as you have a Network connection and a few files.

Thanks to both of you for helping me out!

Cheers! ;)
