Just bought a 'factory-renewed' Series 2 Dual Tuner - 80 hour. Got it home today & ran through guided setup, got some data, etc..

The 500 gig hard drive (Hitachi DeskStar ultra 133) also came in today and was begging me to install it. So, I used Hinsdale's HowTo and did an upgrade from the 80 gig to the 500 gig (kept the recordings cause i hadn't yet watched those intro videos) - took about an hour -ish.

Get everything back together, messing around in the menus, and I go to TivoCast.

System freezes.. :(

I think "that's odd.. I was just in TivoCast before the upgrade".

Power cycle the system, everything seems okay.. About an hour or so later, system restarts on it's own, and comes up to the "serious error" / green screen.

:(

I had checked the temp on the system information page before this happened - when I checked it said 50c (normal).

So I guess my question is - what's the most likely culprit here? Is it more likely the factory-renewed system, the brand new drive, or something that went awry with the upgrade?

If I'm still getting problems tomorrow, I'll put back in the original 80 gig and see if the problems go away.

Any heat issues with S2 and current generation drives? I remember with my Series 1 I had to get 5400rpm drives so they wouldn't overheat the system.

What exact mfstools commands did you use for the 500GB drive? Most likely culprit is restore not done properly.

I would suggest that you re-do the upgrade from the very beginning. Make sure to check all your jumpers before and after.

I would also suggest looking at:
http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php

Hinsdale is very helpful, but mostly outdated.

I used.. mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -r 4 -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hda as described on Hinsdale's guide (http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html) - Step 10, upgrade configuration #3

The upgrade actually worked - all season passes came over, as did the initial "welcome to tivo" recordings. The TivoCast subscriptions came over as well, and it downloaded the ones i signed up for. Jumpers didn't need to change at any point - both drives are set for Cable Select, and they are on different channels (Original Tivo Drive is Master on Secondary IDE, Upgrade drive is master on Primary IDE)

Update on the situation:
After the green screen, I was ready to head off to bed. Just for kicks, I connected to the Tivo with the Tivo Desktop Software, and saw that it was recording. I went back to check it, and it seemed okay.

Until I went into TivoCast - it took me to the screen, but had no text - decided to just leave it like that and go to sleep- and see if maybe it was just ..really.. delayed.

This morning, I check tivo desktop - it connects and talks to the tivo, but the tivo is still on the same screen.

I reboot, and decide to try something else in the Photos and more category.

I went into yahoo weather, same screen.. reboot, go into yahoo traffic - same screen (no text on either of these).

Reboot - run to the forums to find the kickstart code - thinking maybe I just need to have it reload the OS ..

Tivo read my mind - it was doing a software update as i had the codes in my hand. :D

Now - I can get into yahoo weather, traffic, etc.. However, the TivoCast menu option is gone.

Also - every time I check, the temp is still at "normal".

I noticed a lot of people have been having problems with the TivoCast menu being slow, or the menu item going away. Is this maybe a software issue and has nothing to do with the fact I upgraded the hard drive size?

Is there another upgrade guide out there that has 'better' instructions than Hinsdale's updated guide?
