I can download to my computer hard drive w/o problems but I would prefer to use (1) use a much larger external drive as the default drive or (2) cut and paste from the computer's hard drive.
Can someone tell me how to do this?
Thank you
Mort

Get a USB external hard drive enclosure and put a large hard drive in it. You can then use it for whatever you need.

Exactly. I have an external USB HD.
I don't know how (or if) you can make an external drive the default for Tivo downloads. When I installed Tivo Desktop, the software put the "My Tivo Recordings" folder into "My Documents", so I just left it there.
Doesn't matter anyway because I download the Tivo shows to the computer HD, edit the commercials and such with VideoReDo, then output the result to the external drive.
When I'm ready to watch, I move the shows back to the "My Tivo Recordings" folder and transfer back to the Tivo.

I would think there should be a way to change the configuration so that the USB HD is the default.

That's exactly what I did. I'm not at home to check the menu it's in, but you can change your Tivo desktop to look at any drive you want it to for storing and retrieving the programs. I think it's in Properties, but I'm not sure. Fish around - you'll find it.

Assuming you have your USB drive hooked up and mounted in Windows, from the Tivo Desktop:
File --> Preferences. You should be able to change the file location from there.

The OP bought a NAS drive and it seems he can't assign the drive for this use.

Ahh NAS, that is a known problem. See this post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4527017&&#post4527017) for directions on how to hack that NAS to make it TiVo Friendly. That thread also has a less involved workaround that sometimes works on some NAS devices but not all. That workaround consists of copying the folder tot he NAS so that the file atributes in the directory get there in a way TiVo Desktop can stomache.
Jim Spence, thanks for pointing that out, when I read the OP's post I thought he was talking about a USB drive, not a NAS.
