I don't have a home network. I use dial up. What do I need to be able to transfer shows directly to my laptop? (the type of cable) I already have Tivo to go installed on the computer.

I have the 80-hr TiVo® Series2™ DT DVR which was just bought in January 07.

You can simply connect a CAT-5 ethernet CROSSOVER cable from you laptop to your PC.

Works the same as the above support article, but your PC would obviously take the place of one of the TiVo boxes.

On a side note, I would highly recommend a home network and router setup if you are using a broadband provider - this is the only way to fully take advantage of all the features that your DT has...not to mention it would simplify this process or transferring shows.

I did this when I had dial-up Internet service.

As posted above, you will need a crossover ethernet cable.

I'm sure in the laptop, you're going to have to go into the network settings to configure it to allow the Tivo access.
And the same for any software firewalls you may have on the laptop.

Thanks for the quick info. I will pick up a crossover ethernet cable, and give it a try over the weekend. If all goes well I will post back here so maybe it helps someone else.

Quick question and maybe a dumb one: Can you transfer from a Tivo directly to your computer with a direct network or usb cable to increase the transfer speed? I have a wireless network and the transfer speed from my Tivo to tivo desktop computer wirelessly is really slow. It takes 2 hours to transfer a 1.6gb show/ 1hr show.

The link in my first post includes instructions on doing just that. A direct wired connection will always be faster than a wireless one.

Hmm....my Tivo is not close to an ethernet hub or port. I have the tivo connected via my wireless network. I'm assuming what you are suggesting in the link is to wire the tivo to a hub or ethernet port. thus the transfer is wired through the ethernet connection.

I was just wondering if I can wire my tivo to my laptop and transfer files via a usb cable or ethernet cable to increase the transfer speed. Maybe it said that somewhere in the link and i just didn't see if but i looked at all related topics to the link.

Thanks.

"EDIT" my bad...i'm brain dead. I just realized what you were saying and what I was missing. Thanks for the help!!

I got my crossover cable, and it works like a charm. I takes about 20 minutes though, for a 1 hour, high quality recorded program. Now I have to figure out how to burn these, to DVD, so I can store some of my more liked shows, to watch anytime!! I'll research before I start that thread!!

Thanks, steve614 and supasta for you help !!!

20 minutes for a 1 hour show at High Quality is blazing fast!
Glad to hear that everything worked out.

No problem, davesdog.

I second that! That is fast. My wired network through a router, etc., takes just over 1 hour for a 1 hour show at medium quality.
I'm jealous!

Ok. I purchased the Linksys ethernet adapter (usb200m v2) and crossover cable. Connected the adaptor to the tivo (tcd540080) and ran the crossover directly to my laptop ethernet port. I'm not a huge computer networking person so I'm not sure if my computer is configured for networking these two devices together or if it is plug and play?

Needless to say, I'm not sure if I'm transferring over the wireless network or the wired crossover cable from my tivo to my laptop. It appears that the files are transferring at the same rate as before.

What did I do wrong? Or what do I still need to do?

Unplug the wireless adapter form the TiVo when you are using the wired connection.

You have to then set IP addresses on the TiVo and PC ethernet to addresses on the same subnet.
