The other week I finally got round to hooking up an old Tivo to my new Sky installation. I cabled as follows:

Sky Scart 1: Tivo
Sky Scart 2: TV

Tivo Scart 1: TV
Tivo Aux: SKY

TV Scart 1: Tivo
TV Scart 2: Sky

The only problem is that as soon as Tivo processes the Sky signal it crashes. It's fine browsing through the menues but as soon as I press Live TV the Tivo locks up and can only be recovered by a power cycle. Tivo is also crashing when setting up the IR blaster and sometimes during the channel search during guided set-up. When Tivo is crashed I can still use the Sky box from the second TV scart input so I know the problem is with the Tivo.

In guided set-up I'm choosing 'aerial and digital satellite' and setting the blaster up as code 20016 under manufacturer "Sky Digital".

I thought it may be sopmeting to do with the scart output setting on the Sky box but I've tried both PAL and RGB without any luck.

The Sky Box is an Amstrad DRX550 - model 55FH06 (I think)
The Tivo is one the first ones availble here in UK, It's probably a two hard disk model, it's never been modified, never even been opened up.

I searched the forum but had no luck. Am I doing something stupid in the set-up? Any ideas?

Normal setup is

Sky TV Scart -> Tivo AUX Scart - Tivo TV Scart -> TV AV1 Scart

All set for RGB

No other Scart leads are needed, just the two.

Also if your TV locks up you may have the infamous teletext bug.

Action on that depends on if your Tivo has been upgraded and if so by how much (disc size).

Its not the TV thats crashing it's Tivo so I don't think its the teletext bug. I don't think that affected Matsui TVs anyway.
And to confirm, the Tivo is standard, it's still got intact warranty stickers.

As the TiVo crashes at different times (during IR Blaster setup; during Guided Setup; when trying to view Live TV) I'd be inclined to suspect that it's a problem with the Hard Drive.

Presumably when browsing the menus the same bits of the HDD are being accessed all the time, however when you try to set something up or view Live TV different areas of the HDD will start being used and a bad sector is being accessed.

The HDD can be replaced fairly easily; although as I say, I'm only guessing as to that being the cause.

Cheers,

Ian

Yeah, it could be that. The HD was working 18 months ago when it was last used but it could have been knocked since then. I'll try a GS with ariel only, if it keeps happening you could well be correct.

But the common link here is that it crashes when its using the Sky signal so I think that's causing it.

Verses: I think you're correct, I tried the GS with ariel only and it failed during IR blaster setup.
Does anyone know if the fault is likely to be with the 10Gb or the 30Gb drive?

I would swap both drives for one new high capacity drive.

If you change one the other is likley to fail in the very near future if not already suspect.

Re your TV crashing, I was just pointing out that could be the next problem you encounter :)

Replacing the drive(s) with a single large drive configured from a known-good image should cure it. If not, then you may have a problem with the PSU, although as Pete77 will certainly agree, this is rare.

Thanks for the advise Automan, that does seem to be the best plan. I've got a 60Gb sitting around so I'll have to do some research on how image it. Doesn't look too hard though.
