I have a 50" plasma, and whenever I watch SD tv via my cable, there's about 1" on the left side of the screen that has no image. This is true for pretty much all shows on all of my cable channels.
My S3 goes to my TV via HDMI.
It's fine with HD content I get OTA, so it has to be an issue with the tuner in the Tivo.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can adjust/fix this?

It doesn't sound like an issue with the Tivo. Likely it's an issue with your TV overscanning SD resolutions. Try watching SD via a cable box or other non-Tivo S3 tuner. You will probably see the same problem. The viewing area can be adjusted on many TV's, specifically, moving the image vertically and horizontally.

Some brands of plasmas have hidden menus to control some adjustments like that. You might do better to search by the model # of your plasma over at www.avsforum.com and ask about this problem in some existing thread where your model is already being/has been discussed.
Often those adjustments are stored in the display for each input at each resolution, too. Have you tried other inputs with your SD signal to see if the problem occurs on all SD source or is it just SD over HDMI, and thus you probably don't have another HDMI device that could put out a similar signal to compare with, right?

"at each resolution" that would be very helpful. I think I have to get into the service menu though, which is obviously going to be a pain. I can't find any adjustments in the usual menus.
You are correct. No, I don't have another HDMI source, and no, I haven't tried component or anything from the TIVO to the TV. As you can imagine, it's a pain to try to switch a bunch of cables with everything installed in my den. Think hours, not minutes.
Thanks for the insight though. If I can adjust the overscan at a resolution, that would really help.
FYI, the tv is a VIZIO P50HDTV10A

This might help with the service code: http://www.bruzziforum.com/vbf/showthread.php?t=52

I just noticed something. The TIVO info banner goes all the way to the edge of the screen, no matter the content. This plainly makes it a TIVO tuner overscan problem, not a TV overscan problem.
The signal from the TIVO includes content that fills the screen (info bar), but the TIVO tuner overscan is not filling the screen inside the TIVO stream to the TV.

The Tivo interface comes in seperately from the cable signal (as in a cable signal is not needed for the interface to work) so that is not necessarily the case. It could still be that the TV is inproperly handling the cable signal and the Tivo still drops its interface just fine on top of that.

huh? I'm talking about SD recorded content played back by the TIVO. I just use my TV as a monitor.
