just curious..
why is it that tivocomeback is not yet enabled on the series 3? (supposedly for cablelab purposes right?) yet, there's now a pay service that will let us do the same thing?
hrmm..

i'm looking forward to comeback most out of all the "missing" features... but I'd have to guess that it's either because it's "uncontrolled" content, too hard to separate from TTG, or a little of both...

I too am waiting for tivocomeback. I could care less about moving content off of a Series3, but would love to watched DL'd or other content ON the Series3. If I have a $650 DVR and a $1200 display, I'd like a single source for my content...
Regardless the e-mail announcing the Tivo Desktop 2.4 beta said this: "TiVo Desktop 2.4, the upcoming Windows app that automatically converts Web video downloads so you can watch them on your TiVo® Series2™ DVR (soon for TiVo® Series3™ HD)."
The "soon for Series3" note at the end is the most direct mention of this capability I've seen from an official Tivo announcement.

Cablelabs has no jurisdiction over that capability.

I saw that too.. but I'm still scratching my head over it.. never saw a direct reason (sorry, meant to be clearer that I was speculating on cablelabs being the culprit) and found it funny that a pay service offers what we've been waiting for first.

Can someone please explain what Tivo comeback is?
Thanks

tivotocomeback is the ability to take a video file from your computer and send it "back" to the TiVo
The opposite of TiVoToGo

So in otherwords. with Tivo Comeback. I would watch my home movies on my Tivo?
Would Tivoe Comeback be HD compatible? Would I be able to take my "Home Movies" from my Sony HD-Camera & watch my Home Videos in HD? All without having to hook up the dam camera to the TV?

TexasGrillChefI would think, in theory, yes. All I have is an SD camcorder, and hookup to the TV is very easy and straightforward with red/white/yellow jacks on the front (hidden). I suppose an HD hookup might be a little more challenging? However, if it's HDMI, that would be even simpler, yes? I'm totally unfamiliar with HD camcorders.

Exactly my desire also. HD camcorders require component (3-wire RCA plugs) or HDMI input , and often input swapping, in the rear, so it's a pain in the butt to play back HD video. On my HDTV w/ only single component HD input, I have to unplug the S3, plug in my camcorder cables, swap/replug audio cables, push the TV back against the wall, etc... yuck. (not to mention swapping & cueing up tapes to find the clip I want to play back)
Or, I have to spend another $50+ for a component switcher, more $$ for extra cables...
HDMI is much simpler, single cable for A+V, but neither my specific camcorder nor my HDTV have HDMI ports.
I'd LOVE to just stream or copy my selected HDV MPG files from my PC to the S3- clips that are edited and named and stored on my PC drive or some external USB2 drive.
I was thinking that even better could be playing back files directly off an attached USB2 (NTFS or ext2) drive via the USB2 port on back of the tivo- no network transfer time/issues, no space taken up (13GB/hour!!) on the (full) Tivo harddisk, and NO cablelabs issues since it would be a read-only access of an external drive with no way to copy TO the drive. hint, hint??
(plus you could attach maybe a digital camera/memory card reader via USB2 and play back photos directly also)

Complete pure speculation on my part, but perhaps TiVo underestimated the amount of time it would take for CableLabs to approve MRV and TTG and decided against trying to separate TTCB from authorization used by the other do. Namely the a,a,a vs. the i,i,i in the System Info screen. TiVoPony did indicate that TiVo was optimistic that CableLabs would approve the MRV and TTG features of TiVo back in his post (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=315850) from last September.
Then again, maybe I'm way off base and they didn't want to have the come back part without having the To Go part to cut down on support calls that ToGo wasn't working but Comeback was.
Basically it comes down to, who knows?

It seems to me that TiVo would want to get comeback to work on the S3 as soon as possible to compete with the new Apple TV.

I really wish TiVo would fix this, since it has nothing to do with Cablelabs. I hate having to connect my laptop to my TV to watch my personal legally owned video content. It just seems to me to be yet another thing that TiVo promises and then delivers way too late.
Like the last post, you would think that they would like to compete against the Apple's iTV and provide the best complete viewing experience.

If you go to the TiVo website and then to manage my account you will see that the grey transfer feature box for the S3 is now white - you can place a check in there but it won't stick when trying to save.
I think MRV or TiVoComeBack is almost here.

I see the same behavior. Hopefully it works soon!

TTCB would be awesome. I'd finally have something capable of playing HD videos on my TV set. Bonus points if they make MPEG-4 work, which it probably won't the first time around, but if it does, I'd be quite pleased.

Apples (heh) and oranges. Apple TV isn't a DVR and neither TiVo nor any other non-Apple device will likely ever be able to play music and movies "protected" by Apple's DRM.
Showing non-DRM media from PC on TV would be the only place where they overlap, and if that's the only feature you care about then the combination of a DVD burner and a DVD player that can play MPEG files from a DVD-ROM would be cheaper.

No, you will likely be able to play both ITunes purchased music and movies without an AppleTV and/or Airport in just a few months (when the SlingCatcher is released).
The Netgear Digital Entertainer should be able to play "purchased music from iTunes on Windows (M4P)."
http://www.netgear.com/About/PressReleases/en-US/2007/20070314.aspx
With the Slingcatcher you should be "be able to view any web content on your computer on a TV and this will probably include iTunes content."
