I'm not quite what to call this, or to search for. Let me try to explain:

When switch TiVo from a SD Program (480i letterbox) into TiVo's menus, the display will flash to full screen a split second before displaying the menus. I have TiVo set to Native/Panel for my new LCD TV which supports all modes.

Is there some combination of settings that will help avoid this distracting effect?

Thanks

What you are seeing is your HD-TV resetting itself for a different resolution. My Sony does it too, and I found it very distracting. Every time the resolution changed--SD->HD, or 720->1080, etc--it would flicker/reset for about a second.

The answer is to change the TiVo. Instead of native, make it fixed. Mine is 1080-fixed, and it solved the problem instantly. If your TV can handle 1080, that is the way to go. Or 720 if that's what your TV can handle.

yup- in this case "fixed" is your friend.

With fixed you get to watch the Tivo menus stretch.

HD --> Tivo central I see the menu come up pilar-boxed, then it stretches to full screen. Looks like a macro that does panel to full when it comes up.

I don't think that's what he's describing, but maybe I'm wrong. When I first got my S3 I had it set to native, and I saw the scramble/reset when switching modes. Now that I've got it set at fixed, I still see what he's describing... where the 4:3 picture stretches to full screen mode for just a moment before displaying the TiVo menu. I prefer this to the native behavior, but I'd still like not to see it...

EDIT: re-reading, I probably am wrong, as he's running in native mode.

With native mode set, your display must sync every time you change between channels with different resolutions. The length of the sync depends on your display. Some do it in 0.5 seconds, others take 4.0 seconds.

I wish Tivo would make one common-sense change. When native is selected, they should display the menu using the last resolution selected, to eliminate resyncing with menus. For example, if you are watching a 480i channel, they should display the menus in 480i widescreen; if you are watching a 720p channel, they should display the menus in 720p widescreen; and if you are watching a 1080i channel, they should display the menus in 1080i widescreen.

Yeah I finally broke down and tried setting my Tivo to "1080i Fixed" and not only does SD look better I also don't have to deal with all the blank screens between resolution changes. I have to say I'm happy camper. The delays between screens was beginning to make me wonder if HD was worth all the little annoyances. This is one annoyance I'm happy to say is over. Count me in as a fan of 1080 fixed. :)
