View Full Version : Mode 0 traits

After the invaluable help by Blindlemon in getting my beloved TiVo backup and running I enabled Mode 0 in the belief that I needed it because of the shiny new LCD I had as well.
However, since enabling Mode 0 I've experienced the notorious "white flashes" quite a bit which I know is a trait of Mode 0. Because of this I'm considering removing mode 0.
I'm also seeing a pretty poor lipsync issue as well- very noticable on The Apprentice last night, which I was not seeing on 'Live TV.
Is a lipsync issue a known issue of Mode 0? I've searched the forum, but not seen anything obvious.

More likely to be related to your LCD telly due to the image processing. I've been running Mode0 for ages without noticing lipsync issues.

I thought this too, but I there's no lipsync issue evident when viewing "live tv" - which kinda makes it point to the TiVo.
But it's not happening all the time, and the delay between the lips and the audio seems to vary in severity in each occurance of the problem.

Not sure if this helps or not! I noticed lip sinc problems when watching back the Apprentise this morning... also I have Mode 0 and I am having tons of white flashes but to be honest although I notice them I dont 'notice' them if that makes any sence and the overall benefits in picture quality far outway any negatives..

I seem to recall a long, long time ago, when mode 0 was first discussed here, that some people reported lipsync problems, but I don't think it was ever pinned down to the exact cause (VBR, specific settings or whatever). Personally, I have never experienced them (except when also present in the source) but if the consensus is that the white flashes are due to the encoder not being able to keep up, then it could be an artifact of the hardware running at the limit. What bit rates have you got set?

Have ran mode zero for ages, always notice the white flashes, but it does not bother me, never had lip sync problems

I run Mode 0 with almost no white flashes (every few months or so), and have no lip sync problems. Maybe lip sync does only occur with white flashes, even if not always.

I run Mode 0, I've never noticed any white flashes but I only ever tend to record Sky channels, rather than BBC / ITV.
My father runs Mode 0 with the "compromise" settings because he does get the white flashes, mostly on BBC channels though.
There has been mention in other threads of BBC using lower bitrates / bandwidth for their channels.
As for lip sync, I've noticed it occasionally on Sky, particularly Sky One but this also happened pre TiVo so most likely it's a glitch in the individual Sky box, otherwise everyone would be seeing it. ;)
