OK, who was the terrorist?
I thought this was a very good episode, and it's very evident the shyowrunners are "cleaning house." April: Dead. Heather: Making turbines, may never return. The med center has a new tell-it-like-it-is resident and Dr. Dhuwalia to take April's place.
Eric and Stanley were also sent to the other town until Spring, but the show is called Jericho so I don't think we'll see a lot of them.
I know not a lot of people like Mimi, but I really liked her in this episode, and I know not a lot of people like Dale, but I really hated him in this episode. Maybe Dale becomes the new resident bad guy?

The writers need to let Mimi NOT be such a bitch all the time, or complain about living in the country either . She is a solid character.
Ok, they have a wind turbine. Do they really need 10? Are 10 turbines worth precious food?
How do they store the electricity from the wind turbine? 12 volt deep cycle batteries? From where? Inverters? Hello??

I was wondering the same thing. They have to be able to store the power in some way and then have a distribution system! Guess that detail is not important to the writers.
Plot between deputy and Hawkins was painfully slow and annoying.
I was surprised they killed off April; just having her lose the baby would've been sufficient, but I do like the new doctor a lot. He seems like a more mult-faceted character.
Couldn't believe they sent Stanley off to the other town. I really like him! Plus he's the main farmer, so who's going to ensure there IS a spring crop without him.
But I'm happy to see Eric go; he's so boring.
BTW, wasn't the episode title actually"Winter's End?"
Cheryl
"A costly deal" was the morse code this week. It was faster, and for me, faster is better. :)

Theoretically you could build turbines that could generate 120/240v AC directly. But yeah the technical details were really off, since they were amazed that it could generate almost 1500 watts which is really a small amount of power. One appliance could use that much and a whole town would use much more!
Regarding the last morse code, "they will need it" is probably referring to the tank.
And here is my theory:
The tank will probably have to be used to retrieve the 10 men they sent over who will probably be hostages when the turbine guys demand more food.

Maybe they hooked it up to the hospital generator?

That's possible but wouldn't the EMP have fried the inverter?

There is so much wrong with the show when it comes to the EMP... but I just let it slide and try to enjoy it...
for instance, dont all cars with alternators have diodes in the alternator to produce DC? So how do all those late model cars still run, only things with generators like 60's VW's with DC generators should run.

So I was thinking...what's the big deal? Once spring comes can't they just be sure to plant enough food to get them through the next winter...and, for that matter, can't other towns do that as well?

I'm thinking that other things like irrigation, fertilizer and pesticides won't be enough.

But you would think by the time spring gets here they will be able to venture out more without worry of freezing to death. I just can't help but think that people actually did manage to survive 100+ years ago when they had to live without electricity and grow and hunt their own food, etc.
scottykempf
03-29-2007, 12:37 PM
True. I was thinking that while having electricity is nice, having more than one wind turbine was NOT more important than having enough food. They could feed the electricity from the one turbine that they already have to the hospital or to another community building.

But as Lassie pointed out, having more food next fall won't make any difference if they die this winter. And they were getting to the point where they were going to start dying from the cold.
Yes, our ancestors survived winter without electricity. But they had thousands of years to get used to it.

I would think if they are that low on food that they would starve before spring instead of freeze to death anyway. They make it sound like they're just about out of food. I would think if they could stay inside, by the fireplace, that surviving the cold would be easier than surviving without food.

If they had more than enough power, could they build a greenhouse to grow things in the winter? Finding enough glass or plastic would not be easy, but could be possible?

It was pretty ridiculous that men with families and responsibilities had to go to New Bern, while Jake (of course) stayed in Jericho.
I was glad to see April die. Not because I wanted her to die, but that whole storyline with the love triangle was lame, and once she got sick, it would have been really unrealistic to have her miraculously recover with such poor medical facilities.

Well, technically accurate or not, the writers have found a way to get the town some electricity. That's still probably a good thing. :)

And another thing. If they were asking for the extra manpower to help the build the turbines anyway, instead of asking for them as hostages, then the first thing I would say is, well since you're taking some of our men to help you build it then you're not getting 10% of our crops! I say the extra manpower needs to be negotiated in the price of the wind mills.

I'm no farmer, but I thought too that the only farmer we've met should stay home. And what is this "spring crop" stuff? You plant in the spring, but you don't harvest until at least mid-summer do you? It doesn't make sense for all those guys to stay there until they actually get the food, or did I miss something?
I wonder where they will get seed. Isn't most seed hybrids now that can't be used for the next year's seed?
Also, unless there aren't any woods in Kansas, I think you could survive on woodburners and fireplaces easier than without food. Plus they should have forced people to move in together by now. They waste a lot of wood.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Mayor Grey is a freaking idiot.
So Dale and snobby chick finally got it on. I can't stand either of them. I must say though, I think that what Dale did was reasonable. If these "Adults" think they can abuse Dale cause of his age then they need to learn that that is not the case.

But the turbine guy is a freaking idiot, as well. He was basically sacrificing any future sales for the one-time deal (i.e., after this batch, the Jericho folk will know how to make their own)...

Unfortunately, what Dale did was also anarchy, and I suspect is going to be the first step in the deterioration of the social fabric of the town.
The adult who really abused him wasn't the farmer who refused to pay, but the mayor who refused to enforce the law. He's turning Dale into a villain (although it looks like it didn't take a lot of work), and the town into the wild west. I think what this town needs is a strong hand at the helm to turn things around. After they get really bad, of course.
Who could that possibly be? Who on Earth is super enough to turn this town around?!?
Who, I say? WHO?!?

This is the same guy who let two escaped convicts take his gun and leave him bound and gagged in his underwear in the trunk of his own police car.
Maybe Jake's wanna-be girlfriend should be the new Sheriff. She's the one who shot the bad guys and saved the deputies.

I can answer the planting crops question. Depening on the type of crop it would be planted in the fall, growing through the winter (yes it does grow in the kind of cold the show is depicting, slowly, but it grows) and it would be harvested about May/June time frame, some times earlier depending on the winter temperatures. They harvest it, then plant a new crop of the same thing and that crop would be ready for harvest by October.
Some crops are only planted once a year in the spring and some are planted once a year in the fall. Just depends on the crop. Wheat is in the ground right now, has been for months and is soaking up all this rain we're getting in Kansas and growing very quickly!! But, this wheat crop won't be ready for a few more months, it dries in the fields before it's harvested, late summer/early fall some time.
Stanley was growing corn and if I have my facts right, corn won't be planted until spring for a summer harvest. In fact, they were talking about planting corn on the news tonight for E-85 fuel production, so the seeds aren't even in the ground yet.
I can't answer any questions about seeds and hybrids and such. But, I'm sure the farmers know very well how to plant a crop and harvest their own seeds from it. Corn we get in the stores today may not be the same kind of corn the farmers would be able to grow after a tragedy like this, but it would still be corn.

It's those tiny low-power IC transistors that get fried so easily...
