If you regularly travel with a laptop, you might find this useful.

iPIG, http://www.iopus.com/iPig/, is a fully fledged VPN which has consists of a client that you run on your remote system, and a server that runs on a Windows system on your home network. When the client is operating, internet traffic from your remote system is routed through an encrypted tunnel to the server. You can specify precisely what traffic you want to go through the VPN - by default it is all traffic.

I tested this out today and was able to connect to my systems on my home network using their non-routable NAT addresses, effectively as if I was directly connected to the local LAN.

One important feature of iPig is that it is freeware. If you regularly travel with a laptop, it will give you easy access, not only to your TiVo, but to any other resources on your home LAN.

Seems to be a good solution so far. YMMV.

Hmm... it only 'free' up to 5 users, and is Windows 32bit only (but not Vista). Think I'll stick with openvpn.

5 users was OK for me, but OpenVPN looks interesting as well. A Linux server solution has its attractions!

The issue with all these sorts of solutions for me is that generally I can't get a VPN out of where I am working, whether it's our offices or a client site.

This solution works on a 'raw' internet connection, but I've been forced to use www.logmein.com elsewhere.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but I just thought I'd clarify that OpenVPN isn't just for Linux. They seem to have a version for most popular operating systems.

Cheers,

Alternatively, forget about software VPN servers and get a Router that supports VPNs, like the Draytek Vigors or Cisco 800 series.
