Updating the white 360 is the latest move by Microsoft in the battle to take control of the digital living room.

Both [PS3 and Xbox360] allow users to download content such as game extras, images and video to the hard drives [from their online services]

The companies move into offering downloads straight to the living room also puts them into competition with the likes of Apple, who launched its Apple TV box to stream content downloaded from iTunes to a TV screen.

It also pits them against other systems and services capable of downloading and storing film and TV such as Tivo and Sky Plus.

erm, UK tivo's aren't capable of downloading films from an online service though are they?

Neither is Sky Plus if you define it that way (yet, anyway).

Tivo 'downloads' programmes in real time off the broadcast :p

Rubbish. The BBC story is about the US launch and doesn't claim anything about UK Tivos. Nothing sloppy at all.

Actually, it appears to be about both the US and UK versions of the Xbox, and not very clearly differntiated at that.

However, the reference to TiVo It also pits them against other systems and services capable of downloading and storing film and TV such as Tivo and Sky Plus. in the same sentence as $ky+ (which can't download content from the internet anyway) clearly shows that the author doesn't know that UK TiVos aren't the same as US TiVos - and furthermore, by lumping TiVo with $ky+ he shows us that he doesn't really know what he's talking about at all.

Sloppy. I have complained to the BBC about this article.

While I can just-about agree with your former comment, I think that the latter is simply nit-picking. Both Tivo and Sky+ are, basically, DVRs so the comparison on that level is correct.

I agree they both have hard drives.

However, he seems to be assuming that because they have that in common, they share other features as well - which as we know, they do not. Even a UK TiVo is so far ahead of $ky+ it's not worth comparing them; if UK TiVos had the same features as US ones, $ky+ would be dead in the water.

Depends on your definition of "download" I guess. On AvForums everyone's referring to Sky Anytime as "downloading" even though it's just recording froma hidden channel.

I don't think it clearly shows that at all - it's just you're trying to justify your unfounded criticism. The Beeb's article wasn't a news story about differences between UK & US TiVos - it was about the launch of Xbox.

Also I can't see how "lumping Tivo with Sky+" means he doesn't "know what he's talking about at all." Dealing with pedantic and pointless complaints like yours just wastes the licence fee.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

Did you write this story by any chance? If not, then why are you so keen to defend it?

Edit: It seems the BBC news editors agreed with me:-The wording of the piece is ambiguous and it has now been amended. They have removed the references to both $ky+ and TiVo

Well done your pointless pedantry has managed to get a rare topical reference to TiVo removed - you must be proud.

Actually, my original comment was made (I'll admit) without having read the article, and was based only on what the previous posts had said.

However, when you jumped to the defence of the BBC in such an rabid manner, I felt obliged to read the article to make sure I hadn't been hasty in my criticism. It was only at that point that I noticed (pedant that I am) the inaccuracy and ambiguity that I then referred to in this thread and subsequently reported to the BBC.

Personally, I don't feel that the removal of a misleading reference that lumped TiVo in with Sky+ in a context that was inappropriate for both is actually such a bad thing.

However, I guess it may be a loss to anybody who enjoys paying for and reading sloppy, inaccurate journalism...
