have removed an 80gb from my tivo and wanted to format to use on a pc but only 9mb is seen through windows?
have tried the DBAN floppy to wipe the drive but no change
have tried various windows boot floppies but again fdisk only shows 9mb
any other options?
have added to an existing thread in the help center but they have not come up with an alternative approach so far

That is actually correct. Tivo drives need to be 'unlocked' if you want to use them in any other PC. This (http://archive.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=148629) thread should help. I was going to direct you to something called QUNLOCK but it's been so long since it was last mentioned that I can't find it in a search!

FYI only Quantum and Maxtor drives are locked by tivo like this.
..and the tivo itself locks them on every boot, its not a factory thing.
So you have to do this everytime you do a restore/upgrade if you use maxtor drives.

it is a maxtor drive
tried the diskutil but it comes back with: 'drive error - not locked - aborting'
using info it shows
lba sectors lo = 2000
lba sectors hi=0
total sectors and mb = 2000 10.24

Did you use permunlock?
DiskUtil /PermUnlock 0
(with tivo drive on primary master)
