Gwen Stefani night. Can't wait to see what song Sanjaya picked to slaughter and of course some shots of his sister in the crowd!

Lakisha 1-866-IDOLS-01 - It was alright for me, not her greatest I didn't think..
Chris S. 1-866-IDOLS-02 - I thought he sounded a bit out of key or something..
Gina 1-866-IDOLS-03 - I liked it a lot...
Sanjaya 1-866-IDOLS-04 - what is with the hair?? Ouch forgot the words.. I'll give him one thing.. he's consistent..
Haley 1-866-IDOLS-05 - Yes please keep showcasing those legs.. Not the best singer by any means.
Phil 1-866-IDOLS-06 - Uhhhhh.... I didn't like it... but not bad I guess.
Melinda 1-866-IDOLS-07 - very good as usual.
Blake 1-866-IDOLS-08 - A good performance, I think Chris is toast unless America finally doesn't vote for Sanjaya..
Jordin 1-866-IDOLS-09 - I like Jordin but I don't think that was a good song choice at all..
Chris R. 1-866-IDOLS-10 - Ack that didn't do it for me at all....

And Donna Summer is relevant, why?

The things that "inspired" Gwen Stefani could be pretty big.

I'm waiting to see Lakisha sing something that wasn't already done by a black woman. The white guys had to sing Diana Ross the first week, and some of them were pretty crappy at it.

Let's see Lakisha during country week, or Right Said Fred week.

I've been a LaKisha fan but she bored me tonight - just didn't seem to connect although she did pretty well with the song.
OK, just got blown out of the water by Malinda.... again.

Still think it will be a 2-woman finale.
Phil was pretty good, Chris S. needs a click track implant, Haley was OK til she tried to be "original" but then she lost me.

What can be said about Sanjaya -- "you don't listen to anything we say" -- because obviously nobody gives a hoot. He's William Hung to the millionth power - and I like Hung a lot better.

If he makes it to the final 4, I will quit watching.

No way. One of them is going to get Jennifer Hudsoned before too long. Those votes are split, and then once one gets voted off, the other will get the remaining votes.

Lakisha will go first, mainly because she's fatter.

LaKisha - I begin to wonder what is my personal bias against her sound, and what is honestly her performance, but again... I couldn't get excited about her performance tonight. I mean, it was OK, but it was... well, it just wasn't my thing, dawg.

Chris S: Randy and Paula were right... he was musically on key the whole song, but tempo, he was way off. I'd like to hear him perform that song with a click-track in his in-ear monitor, because I think he could actually do that song justice. Tonight... not so much. Needed way more practice.

Gina: Absolutely perfect song for her, and she did it very well. Compared with last week (when she absolutely destroyed "Paint it Black") she hit a home run. Stylistically she needs serious work... she's a serious trainwreck in that department, but musically - she actually has a chance if she can find another couple of songs that are exactly like this.

Sanjaya: Oh, my. Oh, my my my. Yeah, Simon has the right idea. Why bother saying anything, because it doesn't matter anymore. The idio-- erm... peop-- Oh, screw it. The idiots who are going to vote for him despite his singing, are going to vote for him anyway.

Haley: Simon's right, it was rather forgettable. The thing is when Cyndi Lauper sings that song, her unique voice adds to the distinctiveness of the song. Haley's performance was kind of like eating cotton candy... there was just no substance to it. (Edit: Wow - her rehearsal performance was 10x better than her live show performance. I liked the clip they showed at the end.)

Phil: Wow. I agree with Gwen Stefani - I was very surprised. Very good performance. I thought that Randy and Paula were off when they tried to criticize him - I thought both the verses AND the chorus were good, and I actually thought he was better WITHOUT the runs (which is where I differ from the judges).

Melinda: Ok, I know it's just me - I just don't like Donna Summer, apparently, because I couldn't get into this either. It was good, well performed, and honestly I think she was better at doing Donna Summer than LaKisha was... but I just didn't dig it, dawg.

Blake: Not the right song at all for him at all. I was glad to see the beatboxing left at home finally, and let his singing speak for itself, but I'd liked to have seen a better song show it off. (Loved the bit between Blake and Ryan - "Don't speak..." "Don't sing it... we'll have to pay for it.")

Jordin: Ouch. Ouch ouuuuuuuuch. Not good at all... I did NOT like that at all. For me, this was right down there in Sanjayaville. I'd actually be interested to hear either LaKisha or Melinda tackle this song, but Jordin did NOT have the chops for it, and compared with her performance last week that just blew everyone away, this was day and night.

Chris R: He's strictly a big note singer. At least to me, he doesn't have a great voice unless he takes off on the big notes... the quieter parts, he starts to do this weird thing where he flutters about the note without ever landing on the note. It was a good choice to have a guy do this song, because it was a totally different sound for the song, but for me, it wasn't great.

Best of the night: Gina
Worst: Sanjaya of course, but Jordin a close second for me.

Langree
03-27-2007, 08:56 PM
This was the second time Chris' timing was off of the band's. Not a good thing, last week it was because he was walking/singing, this week it's because he didn't know the song.

I think so too.

And this is also the point that I made about Demographics/Style. You don't like that kind of style, so your vote (if you vote) wouldn't be going to either one of them. People who do like that kind of style are generally going to vote for one or the other, not both, thus splitting the vote, and allowing people not as good as them outlast them.

I wouldn't agree with the "screaming" comment. Well, Fantasia, perhaps, but not LaKisha.

LaKisha particularly sings in a very distinct "big voice" singing style, basically gospel style (even if the song isn't a gospel song). It's not screaming, but it does tend to work well with singers that can really belt out the notes from deep in the diaphragm, and it's accentuated when you can color the notes with vocal gymnastics. (Mandisa is the last AI singer that I can remember that also sang in a similar style.)

I actually have hope Sanjaya will go tonight: he made a critical error! He tied up The Hair! Without The Hair he is nothing... 12 YO girls all over the country are dazed and confused without The Hair and don't know who to vote for.

I like Melinda (much better than LaKisha) but I was really disappointed in both of them tonight. They have to do something different, or they're not going to make it. They can't just find the 60's diva song every week. Jordin is trying, although she wasn't that great tonight (but I didn't think she was as bad as LoadStar). Part of it is that I'm really NOT a Donna Summer fan... bleah.

Still like Blake to sneak in at the end, although tonight was just so-so for me, dawg. However, my wife turned into mush, and since the same thing happened to the judges (men--meh, woman--swoon) I expect it's a gender thing.

My wife thinks Haley was not showing enough skin to make it through... I wisely did not say anything.

Besides... I couldn't stop staring at Gwen Stefani all night.... WHOA! She looked so much better than she does in her videos.

If Sanjaya makes it through The Hair Debacle, then I think it should be Chris S.

I really thought the "No Doubt, Cure, Donna Summers or The Police" choice was a cop-out.

Did y'all guess who would do which as easily as we did?

How amazingly convinient that Gwen has influences that fit every one of the 10 Idol's tastes...

I thought Jordin as a school girl didn't look right. She's just too big. Not fat, mind you. Big. That looks works better (IMO) on the little chicks. And something about the song didn't work. Perhaps the band wasn't doing it well, or something. But I thought her performance was bad, and was ready for the judges to tear into her.

As an aside: The whole "guest celebrity coach" thing is really lame, because it's becoming rapidly apparent that most of them don't actually coach worth a darn. It looks like they file the idols in, one at a time, have them sing their song (if they even sing the whole thing) for the guest, then rush them out the door and rush the next one in.

I'd like to see more guest judges like Barry Manilow, that actually took and spent a good deal of time actually COACHING the idols, spending time with them, helping them as they pick a song and then refine the song over the couple of days leading into the show.

Are there actually supposed to be any "front runners"? They were all terrible tonight. Bad High School talent show at best.

I have not the words for pseudo rooster boy. I guess he is pulling for a spot on another Queer Eye spin off.

What the hell is up with the bald guy who lost a fight with Boy George's make up and wardrobe people? He was wearing even more make-up than Gwen "Spray paint me like Death Becomes Her" Stefani? Holy eyebrows and rouge! It seemed as if he was shot with Homer Simpson's make-up gun stuck between the settings of whore and clown!

Sadly those are the only two people who made any kind of impression on me. I can't even remember the rest of them.

It's worth it.

It's worth it to see people (and I don't mean just people here) get worked up over him, too.

I don't think anyone's mentioned this yet, but what the heck was with the sound guy tonight. The Digital Delay on Chris S, Blake and Phil was just unruly. WHY WHY WHY.. Police/Cure songs don't need anything but vocals. BLEAH!

Great stuff tonight? Meh.. not much.

Of what was good.

1. Doolittle -- always swinging the big bat. I'd like to hear her out of her comfort zone more.
2. Blake -- I'm a fan. I like the guy and think he's got great range (more so than anyone else still in this)
3. Gina -- yeah! I love her when she's good.. and HATE her when she's bad. Tonight was on the plus side.
4. Lakisha -- she's got talent, but seems limited in the range. I think w'er starting to see her limits.
5. Haley -- Good song for her. I was entertained more by her look than the song though.
6. Jordin -- the song choice was not good.. kinda low in her range and not too singable. But she handled it quite well.
7. Phil -- Yawn. What does he really bring to the show anymore? Nothing memorable.
8. Chris R -- Just not good. I'm sick of his look, his voice, everything.
9. Chris S -- Man, don't beat up Police songs.
10. Sanjaya -- Please make it stop.

Girls were good tonight. Guys sucked.

I'd like to see more guest judges like Barry Manilow, that actually took and spent a good deal of time actually COACHING the idols, spending time with them, helping them as they pick a song and then refine the song over the couple of days leading into the show.Well, most of the guests they get actually have active careers and can't afford to take a week off :p

PS. I don't care what Figaro says, Gwen Stefani is hot. Plus, I have HD and I didn't think she was wearing a ton of makeup (and believe me, HD is pretty unforgiving in that department :o ). Maybe she's just very good at it.

Jordin. That is one big girl. And, like uncdrew, I don't mean fat... when she's on the stage by herself she looks fine, but when she's standing next to Seacrest she looks like Attack of the 50' Woman! I mean, I know Seacrest is not a large man, but Jordin looks like she could fold him up and stick him in her pocket: her head, shoulders, everything. It's just... weird looking.

I was happy to see Seacrest call Melinda on her "you really like me" shtick. That's been old for about 4 weeks now. I think she's the best pure singer on the show but that attitude is extremely annoying. She's been doing it a bit less but still too much.

It was a weird night for me man... because Paula was actually coherent for most of the show and had something useful to say about one or two of the performances (I mean beyond praising the look or repeating what Randy just said). And Ryan and Simon didn't get into any of their tasteless homophobic posturing. I guess with Sanjaya's Hair they didn't feel it was necessary to provide those other forms of entertainment :D

When I look at it now, it's bouncing between Haley and Chris Sligh. Chris has had two bad weeks in a row, and definitely doesn't have an Idol-winning appearance, shall we say, so I'm not surprised to see him down there. Haley was voted for last week more for her appearance than her vocal ability; Simon correctly pointed out in previous weeks how completely and totally unmemorable she is.

I'm thoroughly unsurprised by either being down there (given that people are voting for Sanjaya solely to completely f$%@ with the system).

Edit:
As I reload, Haley continues to be down near the bottom, though the rest are fluctuating wildly. Jordin is now down there, which had this been last week, I'd have been surprised, but this week - not as much. I just thought she chose a bad song and sang it badly this week.

Agree with many that Melinda, while certainly incredibly talented, is getting more boring as the weeks go on (with Lakisha tagging along as well). It's as though Idol producers slipped Gwen a little money to throw Donna Summer into the mix. It cheapens their talent to perform music of the same style week after week. I was thinking that Gwen Stefani week would have relied so heavily on New Wave influences that it would have forced L & M out of their comfort zones, but, alas...I'm not hoping for country week for them (still a lot in that big-voice style to choose from) but maybe punk rock or 70s arena week? Not going to happen, but it would lessen my boredom considerably (I actually fast-forwarded through Melinda's performance because it was so expected [and the disco instrumentals were hideous]).

if sanjaya makes it this week, after that atrocious performance.... forgetting his words... then all credit must go to Howard Stern. forgetting the words is like a death sentence.

and for every week he survives, the stern effect will pick up steam. more and more news outlets will pick up the story, word of mouth will increase... will it carry sanjaya to the final 2?? doubt it... but it could happen... i hate to sound like the stern pimp machine, but one cannot deny his influence.

i can't wait until thurs am, when we get to hear eric the idol expert get goofed on.

on a serious idol note:

if army boy sounded like that every week, he would win the contest.

and did i miss sanjaya's sister??? didn't see her  maybe she couldn't get out of her Hooter's shift.

LaKisha: Last Dance (Donna Summer)
Chris Sligh: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (The Police)
Gina: I'll Stand By You (The Pretenders)
Sanjaya: Bathwater (No Doubt)
Haley: True Colors (Cyndi Lauper)
Phil: Every Breath You Take (The Police)
Melinda : Heaven Knows (Donna Summer)
Blake: Love Song (The Cure)
Jordin: Hey Baby (No Doubt)
Chris Richardson: Don't Speak (No Doubt)

While I KNOW that Love Song was originally The Cure... I'm not sure Blake does. That was done (once again) as a distinctly 311 remake; the judges were still oblivious.

LaKisha: Wake me up when she sings something from this century.
Chris Sligh: Why is it HARD to get the beat right? I can't sing and I can get the beat right.
Gina: Impressive. Still not a very good singer, but much better performance. Somebody please help her dress in clothes that DON'T make her look fat.
Sanjaya: Sad, just Sad.
Haley: Mmmm...Legs.
Phil: The guy can't sing the rough parts. He's a Magic 107.7 singer.
Melinda : Just a pro, but wasted an opportunity to sing a current hit.
Blake: Musically talented. Loves those slow songs doesn't he? Needs to work on performance energy.
Jordin: The BAND screwed this up for her. Where was the BEAT?! No bass player tonight? Good Lord look at the hands on her! She could palm Ryan's head and throw him off the stage.
Chris Richardson: Great arrangement to one of my favorite songs. Didn't knock it out of the park though.

Bottom Three: Sanjaya, Chris S., Haley
Out: I think this is the week for Sanjaya to go

Gwen Stefani: I've been telling my wife how hot Gwen was for years. FINALLY, she acknowledged her beauty last night. But how in the hell can these singers pass up the opportunity to sing something current and hip for Donna Summer and Cindi Lauper? I don't get it. No Doubt has a song for everyone up there.

I thought Gwen was next to useless as far as coaching went. She listened to a song, made some sort of generic comment for the camera and that's all. Of course more could have taken place behind the scenes but somehow I didn't get that impression.
And I don't get the OMG she's so hot thing either. Cold icy blondes with no figure in heavy pancake don't cut it here. She may be a fashionista on the screen but when she opened her mouth nothing of substance came out. Very "meh".

Much as I used to like Chris R., he's worn thin and I think I would like him much more as a grandson than as a singer. Agree with Melinda getting boring, and although LaKisha came alive a tad bit she still has a ways to go. Jordin looked ridiculous, Blake looked very good, everyone else blah.

Sanjaya is crazy like a fox- the whole nation willl be talking about him all day.

She may have had a lot of make up on but it looked a lot better than her usual makeup. I'm thinking the major difference was the eyebrows last night. In any case, she looked really, really good. And having never heard her voice, I was getting some cross feed from bad 24 memories because she sounds a lot like elisha cuthbert when speaking.

For the love of God, can you people just give up on the Jennifer Hudson crap? She was voted off because she wasn't that good. There is no big controversy over Jennifer Hudson. She was boring and she can't sing anything except loud power notes. If Lakisha or Melinda get knocked off it is NOT "getting Jennifer Hudsoned" because Hudson was mediocre and they are good. And don't even bother trying to bring up the oscar, because reese witherspoon won one too for a singing role and she is not in the same league as most american idol contestants. Hudson was deservingly voted off, end of story, no controversy. Take off your tin foil hats.

I think haley has a much better voice than most of the contestants, even if she doesn't use it properly all the time.

Chris Sligh should go. I've had enough. He never lives up to his potential and he's always screwing up the pacing. That is unforgiveable. Get the heck off the stage. You were fun for a while but I'm bored with you now.

I thought Gwen was next to useless as far as coaching went. She listened to a song, made some sort of generic comment for the camera and that's all. Of course more could have taken place behind the scenes but somehow I didn't get that impression.Considering this is the week they cut the show to one hour, with 10 contestants, we really can't say much based on what we saw on-screen. They simply didn't have time to show much: that's 6 minutes per contestant, minus commercials, the performance, and judging (and the lame "questions from the fans")--doesn't leave much time for clips (yes I know the show was 1:08 last night--still). I thought some of her comments were pretty on-target, although she's obviously not a voice coach. The whole coaching thing is just a way to get some extra celebrity on the show, though, and for the artists a chance to perform in front of a huge TV audience. These people may have some experience on-stage but they're not, generally, trained in voice. The best they can do is discuss arrangements, etc. Besides, if you only have a short time with someone you can't really tear them apart and put them back together; you're mostly just tinkering and giving them confidence.

And I don't get the OMG she's so hot thing either. Cold icy blondes with no figure in heavy pancake don't cut it here.I definitely enjoy a good figure, but that doesn't mean women who are naturally slender (not unhealthily slender as with most runway models and some actresses) can't be beautiful too. And, one of the things I liked best about her last night was that she was not cold or icy; she was warm and pleasant and no way diva-ish. And she has GREAT eyes

While I agree that Jennifer Hudson wasn't terrific on Idol (can't comment on her movie performance - haven't seen it yet), I think it's pretty clear she was miles better than that red-haired kid who stuck around longer than her. In my book, "getting Jennifer Hudsoned" doesn't mean the best singer getting voted off early, it means one of the better singers getting voted off while some truly horrible singers still remain.

I think Gwen gave some great criticism to the contestants, but as with all the mentors before her, the contestants chose to ignore her comments. As a result, they heard the same comments from the judges after each performance. How many times do they have to hear "just sing the melody" before they listen. She also told Chris S. that he needed to watch his timing, and she was right.

I haven't been voting for Sanjaya, but I do like him. I agree with the judges, he's better than what he's bringing each week. As for the hair, I don't get what the fuss is all about. It was fun.

I'm a little worried for Sanjaya tonight. I think he's going to lose some of the 9 - 13 year old girl vote because the hair may have scared some of them. I also think he's going to lose some of the 20 - 60 year old men vote because they didn't show his sister at all. At least not like they showed her last week. I still have vertigo from that. :)

You have to wonder how much AI will use their 'right' to throw out votes based on whatever reason, and decide Sanjaya came in last. They have a disclaimer at the end of the show that spells out that right.

Sanjaya has been walking a fine line between being a William-Hung-like character that people want to see, and turning the show into a joke. Last night's hairdo may have nudged him over that line.

Speaking of which... what is his major malfunction with that anyhow? I really don't know if there can be anything more distracting that someone singing slightly off-beat. It's like watching a video clip with the audio and video out of sync.... it is getting horrible.

I just can't understand how someone who can actually sing well can't manage to follow along with a song.

I don't see much original in Melinda or Lakisha, both can sing but lack personality. However, outside of Blake, it's tough to come up with anyone for the "young people" to get behind.

I loved Jordin last week and loved the song that she picked, but I was shocked by not liking her performance last night... NOT AT ALL

Phil was the best guy and Gina was the best girl.

I kept waiting for Lakisha to sing an up-tempo song... well, now I see why she doesn't do them :). It wasn’t terrible, but it was much worse than her usual standard. The more I see her perform, the more she looks like a one trick pony to me... I believe that Malinda is much more versatile.

What is this "same style" you're talking about?

You hit the cliched nail on the head. I wasn't referring to musical genre so much as style. How do I define that style? Old-fashioned. I think Lakisha and Melinda are both way ahead of the pack talent-wise, but they're playing it safe to the point of becoming dull. I haven't been entertained by them for the past few weeks. I think singing something in a more modern style would alleviate this problem considerably. (Not that I have anything against jazz standards or Broadway.)

.......I think it should be vote for the person you want off. ......

That's exactly the way it should be. As it stands now, sites like VFTW can unify on one person and likely can help keep that one person there with all the votes the site pushes for.

If you had to vote for who you want off, how would VFTW get everyone to keep one person there? The votes would end up getting split and as Marct said, it would take a lot more votes to have an impact on keeping someone in.

The way to fix it is to have the judges impact the voting.

Have them rank the contestants. Last night they would be ranked 1-10. Then you use a multiplier, based on their ranking, on the fan votes. This would allow the judges to regulate, somewhat, the madness.

That might eliminate the VFTW/Stern effect, but it would ruin the show for people who actually cared who won. You'd have to essentially vote 9 times to keep your favorite in the top ten. Or X-1, with X being the number of "singers" left. What fun is that?

They almost have to keep it like it is, as I doubt the producers and network want to acknowledge the VFTW and Howard Stern's pull. If Sanjaya is gone in the next three weeks, they'll leave the voting as is.

... at least that's what I think. :)

Well singing well and having good rhythm are two completely separate things.

That's true, but the most common problem is usually the former. Even people stone-cold tone deaf can usually follow along with the song correctly. It seems clear that Chris has spent an appreciable amount of time singing... hopefully along with some sort of actual music...

Maybe it's just nerves. Whatever the cause, it's still wierd.

Gwen Stephani definitely was caked in makeup. She was like a ghost!

Didn't chris daughtry lose after singing a non-rocker-like song last year? If so, I wonder if that's what will happen with gina... even though simon likes it when they mix it up, it seems like the voters prefer all rocker all the time.

If he (Sanjaya) actually goes through and wins, they will have to change the way it works. As much as I hate that he would win, it is clear to me that the way they are doing things just sucks.

I think it should be vote for the person you want off. That way it takes 10 times as many votes to do any good. Or, it should cost you a $0.25 to vote for someone not in the judges bottom 3.

LOL. Then at least all those parents of teenagers can knock some sense into their kids after getting the bill. :)
Why would they change anything? The ratings are as high as ever. The buzz from Sanjayjay is huge, and if it continues, advertisers will be lining up for the next edition of Idol. Remember, "there's no such thing as bad press".

Judging by the busy signals he's pretty safe tonight.

Agreed about Chris. He must have some concept of rhythm... his comments after the song ("the kick is rarely on the downbeat, most songs have that...") show that he recognized the rhythm in the song, he just mucked it up. There were moments that he actually got the beat back, but he always seemed to lose it again going into the "Every little thing..." in the chorus.

I am tired of Melinda. Her fake reactions are over the top. Seeing her mouth THANK YOU makes me sick. She knows she can sing but I guess playing dumb pays off big on Idol. This is Tony Kornheiser's take too. He has been saying for weeks that what he refers to as "her fake humility" will start to wear on the audience. But she will be there right at the end, IMO.

The way to fix it is to have the judges impact the voting.

Have them rank the contestants. Last night they would be ranked 1-10. Then you use a multiplier, based on their ranking, on the fan votes. This would allow the judges to regulate, somewhat, the madness.

-Mike

The judges have already impacted the voting.

How do you think we had the top 24?

The judges and the producers pretty much chose 24 people out of how many thousands.

They've had enough influence.

The judges choosing a winner aren't what AI is about!

It's about the judges picking a set of people then America voting on them. To mess with that would ruin the show.

RegBarc
03-28-2007, 01:57 PM
If the Judges get pissed that Sanjaya is voted all the way past the top 10 to the top 3, it's their own fault for voting for him in the first place. They had their say, now it's our chance (the collective "we" including me, you, TCF, and VFTW) to influence the results.

Screw that show. May the worst man win.

LOVED Sanjaya's hair! ROFL! I thought it showed that he has a sense of humor about it all and I say "good for him!". It actually made me like him more. He also performed much better than he ever has (even forgetting words).

Underwhelmed by LaKisha and Jordin this week...but want them to stick around since they usually pick much better songs.

Melinda and Blake are my picks of the week...also loved Gina (perfect song choice! just wish that she'd done more than stand still and sing) and Phil.

I wish they'd show more mentoring by Gwen...from what they showed, it just looked like she listened to them and then gave her opinions on them for the camera. I'm sure she did more, but it would have been nice to see that.

I think it should be vote for the person you want off.

This has been discussed ad nauseum, almost every week, but there are two huge problems:

1) We'd have a "vote for the best" phenomenon instead, and all the good singers would be in trouble. I think keeping one bad singer around is far less damaging to the show than the best singers being voted off.

2) Talented singers that have a more narrow demographic have no chance. Someone like Fantasia, who had huge admirers and huge haters, would have been gone early. You'd be left with the blandest singers at the end.

If they REALLY want to minimize the effect of a small group of power voters voting for the worst, the simplest solution is to have a limit, say 5 calls per phone number. But they'll never do that, because Ryan Seacrest's "40 million votes were counted" would become "15 million votes were counted." But ultimately, I don't think anything's going to change - this "controversy" has made more people watch the show, and has gotten it a lot of press.

I would imagine if it were 5 votes per household they might get more votes than you think. There's only a 2 hour window and after a lot of busy signals people probably give up. I am willing to bet that a lot of votes don't get counted now because of busy signals, so the number might remain closer to what it is than you might think since it could be filled up with "busy signal giver uppers".

Sanjay can be no higher than 4th if my math is correct.

Just for fun here is how I figure that.

30 million votes according to Seacrest. 10 singers. Each singer gets 3 million votes,
I know I know, some get more or less.

So Sanjay gets at least 3 million votes a week. But since he is not in the bottom 3 he is actually
pulling more than that. With help from VFTW and Stern he is probably pulling in closer to 6 million.
If dial idol is even remotely correct, that should be a good guess.

So once it is down to 5 singers. 30 million / 5 = 6 million votes per idol, Sanjaya enters the danger
zone. He could go when it is down to 5 or more likely.

Top 4. 30 million/4 = 7.5 million. He is out. VFTW and Stern won't have the numbers to keep
him in it. (much to my sadness)

So top 4 is as high as he will go! Enjoy the ride in the mean time and dial, dial, dial!

pdhenry
03-28-2007, 02:32 PM
That's exactly the way it should be. As it stands now, sites like VFTW can unify on one person and likely can help keep that one person there with all the votes the site pushes for.If it changes VFTW would just change to VOTB (Vote Off The Best) and the better contestants would get picked off even sooner. At least now it's the relatively weak performers that still get bumped (aside from the current VFTW selectee).

Your assumptions are very flawed. Let's take it to the logical conclusion:

-Each contestant gets 3 million-ish votes (30 million divided by 10 = 3 million)
-Once we're down to 5 contestants, the average contestant gets 6 million votes, but every contestant still gets his or her 3 million votes, so every single contestant is voted off, and nobody wins.

Uhm, no. They pick up the voted off idols voters. Sorry if that wasn't clear. For example if Chris S. goes, Blake and Chris R. would pick-up most of his voters.

This really bothers me also, and I believe it's entirely set up by the producers. They know if they made everybody sing No Doubt songs, some people would look foolish. Maybe even the people they consider the favorites.

I say if you are going to pick a theme, stick too it. Don't make up loopholes, to allow people to pick whatever they want anyway.

What's next? Marilyn Manson week, where Melinda gets to sing Gladys Knight, because Marilyn once heard a song of her's on the bus? Or maybe they can have Gloria Gaynor night where Blake gets to sing 311 because Gloria and SA Martinez both have A in their names.

Ridiculous.

of course, you are assuming sanjaya's 6 million stays at 6.

if you assume, out of the core voters, someone who is not voting for sanjaya now will not change their mind later, then the only way sanjaya has a chance is for the stern contingent to increase their votes. with the increase word of mouth and buzz as it gets closer to the end, i can see more people voting for sanjaya, an increased number of times.

people on the show this morning were calling and reporting they voted 100 times and more. assuming they are telling the truth, i'm sure there are plenty of people who would do that, and more so as the weeks go by. in a way, the stern demo is a more dangerous group than the teenybopper demo in terms of determination.

granted, they are not representative of the entire stern listener fan base, but it would increase the number of votes nonetheless. honestly, i've made like 10 votes in 5 seasons of AI, and always in the final 2... and i called in like 15 times last night. only took 5 minutes of my life, for another 2 hours of sanjaya.

That makes me wonder - is it easier to get through on the phone lines from Alaska or Hawaii, because they won't be as overloaded during the times the show is broadcast there? If so, I'd think that contestants from Alaska or Hawaii would have a distinct advantage!

I don't know about Hawaii, but not Alaska. Our shows air an hour earlier here. In other words, they are on the air here at the same time that they are on the air in the Pacific timezone. Just like they air an hour earlier in the Central timezone, so that they are on the air at the same time as the Eastern timezone.

They never say "8, 7 central and Alaska" though.

With a bit of marketing he could become the next big thing.
nothing a little sound editing can't fix

In Hawaii they also show it an hour early but Hawaii is 2 hours behing the west coast in the winter and 3 hours behind during daylight saving time.

The way to fix it is to have voters put their money where. their dialing fingers are...Have the performances downloadable for a fee and the performances that generate the most cold hard cash stay. After all, they are in theory trying to find an idol whose records (Cds, downloads, whatever) will SELL.WRONG! The sales they're MOST after are those for their $600,000 per 30-second commercial. They do that by by providing entertainment, not talent. They make that part clear by their tryout shows - displaying the worst talent for us all to laugh at.
Before I became aware of the Sanjaya movement, I was already done with this season; but, I'm watching it again because I LOVE seeing AI's lack of respect for talent come back to bite them.

I just saw Tuesday and WEdnesday's episode last night.

Lakisha seems a little more boring than usual.

Jordin was nowhere nearly as good as usual, because of the song choice. That type of song she sang is the type that involves note moving all over the place, and I guess she did okay, but her talent is in hitting the single pure notes, because her voice is so pretty when she does that.

Melinda was bad I thought. To much vibrato in her voice, instead of hitting a solid pure note, and she did too much yelling and not enough singing. At least her hands and head weren't shaking so much this time.

Gina was completely excellent, a far cry from last week. Maybe the best one of the night.

Sanjaya was better than average, though not as good as he was on 60's week. But safe to say in my mind that he's not axeworthy.

Chris Sligh, to me, looked like he was the worst of the 10. He actually wasn't horrible, but none of the 10 were horrible. When I compare them though, I have to say Chris Sligh was not as good as the other nine.

Simon has a pretty good comment about Haley. She wasn't memorable nor stood out. But she wasn't bad either. Not being bad is enough to save her, especially when you throw her body into the package.

These last few weeks I've liked Chris Richardson's performance, and I think he put out another good one.

Phil was unexpectedly good this time.

Blake was pretty good. Not his best, but a high quality performance in my book, despite what judges said. I agree with Simon that Blake's the best of the guys.
