My Series 2 Tivo unit was locking up and the harddrive was making some serious noises. After rebooting the unit numerous times hoping it would fix it's self and missing scheduled recordings I contacted Tivo.
They wanted $50 to replace it. If I wanted to get a new before sending mine in I had to shell out another 50 buck for deposit. Then I would have to pay for shipping the unit back. After they received it I would get my 50 dollar deposit back.
The other option was to just pay the 50 bucks and shipping and send it to them and hope the turnaround time was quick.Considering all of that trouble that would be i decided to spend few extra bucks and upgrade the unit myself.
I purchased a Seagate 160gig drive. Purchased InstanCake and in about 1.5 to 2 hours I was done. I was completely surprised it worked. Keep in mind that I had to go through and reconfigure the unit and multiple reboots. But in the end it was well worth it!
If you have any doubts of upgrading your Tivo unit don't hesitate doing do. Instead of have 80 hours of record time I now have 178 or so.
I want to thank DVRupgrade for making this so painless and possible!!
FYI: My unit is a 540/80
Thanks Again!!! :)
