What do I need to do before I ship it to wipe my info off of there, or does that even matter?

You don't really need to do anything, but to send a totally tidy system to the winner, wipe off all the programs, preferences, season passes with "Clear and Delete everything" from the menu where you also find restart.

Mine is starting out at $930... it has a lifetime subscription. I have seen some "buy it nows" for $1200.

Here's mine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=011&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=320097271106&rd=1&rd=1

ya that lifetime is the kicker on those things. My buddy is looking to make the leap but doesnt want to spend the up front cash. he dropped 1000 on the hr10-250 back in the day only to watch me get it a year later for half the price, hehe. He's not going the early adopter route this time. I thought maybe the used ones were cheaper. They arent. You can get one at costco for 599.

1200 with LT is a good deal.

I'd barely break even at $1300 for my first one.

Of course they are a bit cheaper now but with the opportunity to do lifetime being so limited (grandfathered S1 or LT gift card) now they should get good money.

I sold mine for $1270...

+ $1270.00 (sales price)
- $46.60 (ebay fees)
- $37.13 (paypal fees)
- $286.00 (Series 1 cost)
- $199.00 (Xfer fees)
- $21.72 (FedEx fees)

Net = $679.55

I didn't make any profit off of the deal, except for the fact that I got a Series1 Tivo for free. The remote that came with that is no longer around and some of them have sold for up to $150 on ebay.. So whatever I can sell that for is my only real profit.

Oh yeah... i know that.

Question... The Tivo Lifetime stays with the box, correct? Do I need to do anything in order to transfer the subscription?

Call me crazy but I ran the S3 and the HR20-700 (DirecTV) side by side for a month and the HR20 won me over. I was having huge cablecard issues with Comcast/Adelphia, so I cannot blame the S3.

I just sold mine 5 months used for $1200 on Sunday at eBay - Buy It Now style.

Of course I had voided the warranty by socketing the PROM so I could make subtle changes to the software. This appeals to a smaller group of people so I had to lower my expectations on the price.

Why did you sell?

Why are you selling it?

Personally, I just don't want to have to go through the hassle with the cable-card thing. I just don't have the time (w/work) for multiple tech visits if needed to get it up and running correctly... I just want to be able to record my shows, so I just ordered a TW Dual tuner HD box instead. I just started a new job and am in the process of moving and I just don't have the time. My loss... I love Tivo and under different circumstances I wouldn't sell it, but oh well.

I wish I would have known. I just ordered one from the Tivo store today. I posted here, waited a little bit and then went ahead and ordered from the store.

Not unless you're doing Buy it now. I always start my stuff at something like $.90 with no reserve to keep the fees low. Just make sure you list it in the appropriate directories so lots of people see it.

It sounds like you didn't do anything but transfer money around and get the use of of an S1 for an additional 12 months. Maybe you could make the S1 without a subscription... But still, the numbers don't add up.

If you have owned the S1 since new and also paid $199-$250 to initially get the lifetime+cost of the box then you lost money... You did get many years of service. You have opened up my eyes to what a S3 is worth w/ lifetime. I can see there might be value in buying a lifetime giftcard.

You should put it on craigslist and keep 100% of the money.

How do you purchase a lifetime gift card? On Tivo's web site it says the lifetime offer has expired. ???

People bought 'em up when they heard lifetime was coming to an end. They are getting significantly more than the $300 face value / purchase price for them.

They are usually all over ebay.

My problems stemmed from the Adelphia changeover to Comcast. Initially, I had no problems, but then Comcast changed some "coding" and sent an update. It crashed my cards for 2 weeks, and during those 2 weeks, Comcast would not acknowledge a problem on thier end. Finally, they admitted it was a head end problem, and it was still not 100% fixed when I sold my S3 last week.
Again, I loved the S3 and have always been a Tivo fan. I just got frustrated with Comcast and went back to D*. The HR20 is a decent box, but its hard to compare anything to Tivo, since after all its a Tivo :)

Why didn't you see if it worked, then if it was any hassle sell it then? My Series 3 CableCARD install took less time than a cable box install because the guy popped the cards in and everything worked within minutes (instead of running wires to everything and setting the box up). The only thing we waited around for was for the headend to send the ping.

I haven't had a glitch with the Series 3 since the original install..(going on 6 months now).

Plus if all you want to do is "record my shows" the cable dvr may not even be able to do that. Seems you bought it, read a few threads and decided to dump it based on that, what a shame.

For me, the possible negatives outweighed the positives in my situation, which is hell in itself. I am in the process of moving, I have a new job where I can't take off for multiple tech visits if that were to be the case (which by the sound of it, there is a pretty decent chance that would be the case.) I actually have an HD DVR already and I don't really mind it. I really wanted a dual-tuner box and the TW CSR told me that they have those available. So I got two of those coming. In the end, I just couldn't take the chance. I can't take off work if there were any problems and I would be screwed for weeks on end if everthing didn't go just right.

I ordered a Tivo series 3 because my cablevision HD DVR is a POS! I came home today and found my Tuesday shows did not record! I am so happy my Tivo arrives on Thursday. I would have bought this guy's series 3 if I had known ahead of time.

 Welcome to capitalism!

If you bought one of the S2 on Ebay with lifetime and then you paid the $200 to transfer it you would have been very close to that $700 figure anyway.

Some of my TiVo's cost $199-$249-$299 for the lifetime service.

After paying for my first S1 TiVo and then upgrading it to 600+ hrs and adding Lifetime I paid over $1,300, and that was 8-9 years ago. Keep in mind that prices for TiVo's (S2's) and Hard Drives have dropped since then.

I am still a bit confused, are you using the S3 now (at your new location)? Not to beat a dead horse, I understand all of your motives, but from what I gather you haven't used the S3, and have determined it wouldn't work. Don't take what you read here as the norm, people do have issues, no doubt, but I have never started a thread saying "I have had no issues". Point is, if you have a problem, this forum is a great place to come for help, but it shouldn't be used as a gauge for how every single S3 and cable franchise in the country is going to behave.

Of course this is all moot because you are already listing it, and I hope you get what you are asking for it.

I am not using it right now (haven't got cable cards)... I plugged it in and set it up in my daughters playroom because I knew that we were moving, and I would set it up (for good) in the living area once we were all moved in. To make a long story short, I have exactly ONE TIME that I can take off of work to go meet the cable guy to hook things up. If things don't work right with the cable cards, I CAN NOT take off work again for a very long period of time. Therefore, my glorius HDTV will be useless until I could get a Saturday appointment that works with my schedule, which at this point in time is 3 weeks away. Then I would have to pray that they would work then. Too much of a gamble based on the issues that a lot of people are having with the CC's and the techs that are installing them.

03-28-2007, 02:58 PM
Simple solution - have them show up with CableCards and TW DVRs for that one appointment. test & play with everything, and assuming things work on the first time (they do for 70% of the folks in one of the polls), return your TW DVRs some other time when you pass by their physical office location. I bet you can afford a few days of duplicate/redundant fees (they'll prorate) :p

you can pick up cable dvrs at the local office, u dont need anyone to come out. Just an FYI. I moved and thats what i did. Just stopped and got the boxes myself. Mainly because i wanted new ones, not recycled.

That may not work when setting up new service (I assume that is something he is doing), as someone usually has to come out and connect the cable.

ya, but that doesnt require you to have a box. You can just plug the coax directly into any tv (that is if it has a built in tuner and is not just a monitor). As long as your getting your basic, they can program anything you throw on it after that remotely. Sounded like he was getting cable either way is why i mentioned it.

Depends on where you are, too - the Comcast Nazi's around here wouldn't let me. The lady told me that the HD DVR was "too hard to set up, it's got like 5 wires you need to hook up".

It's great if you can, though (and figure out where ALL 5 wires go)!!! :)

For the OP - sell if you want, but there was a poll around here that said the vast majority or respondents had their cable card working on the first try (something like 80% iirc). Even if they don't, you can use it without cable card until you can get the guy back out (and they probably have Saturday appointments so you don't have to take any time off). I'd at least give it a shot before potentially taking a loss on the sale.

doh, that sucks. id be like "5 wires, it only needs 2, hdmi and coax". But i know the type you speak of, its like talking to a brick wall. They dont budge.

As for the op, just tell them you have 3 tv's. one your doing cable cards on, the other 2 their HD dvr's. If the S3 doesnt work, you still got your boxes, if it does, tell the installer you must have explained your setup wrong, u dont need the boxes.
