View Full Version : TiVo loses RF signal from set top box
Hi Folks,
After 7+ years of sterling service it looks like I have a little TiVo trouble:(.
For the last week or so it has lost the RF signal from the set top box(Scientific Atlanta on Virgin Media or NTL as was). I need to then go into the settings and get it to reacquire the signal but everytime the box changes channel it is lost.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Sounds like I may need a new analogue tuner in the TiVo. If I do, I might upgrade the disk etc., so can anyone recommend somewhere to send it off to for this work to be done? Don't have the time or inclination to do it myself and I'd rather someone else guaranteed the work;-). I seem to remember an outfit in Ireland was doing stuff like this but somewhere in Central London would be preferrable so I wouldn't need to ship the machine.
BTW, any more rumours of TiVo coming back to the UK? It's been a long time since I had a look here!
Cheers,
jah
Spoke to a TiVo repair guy about this problem and he seems to think that I have an issue with interference and it shouldn't be a tuner problem.
I've tried setting the RF channel, which must be 59 because it's analogue cable, and ensuring that there's no aerial connection to the TiVo. This makes no difference. When the TiVo tries to change channel it loses the signal. It's possible that NTL/VM have added a new frequency to the cable which is interfering. The TiVo repair guy seemed to think that might be the problem. I've noticed that there is at least one fuzzy signal coming through the cable on channel 33.
Essentially, what appears to be happening is that the TiVo tries to tune to channel 59 on the aerial. I suppose the communal aerial in my block of flats may suddenly have acquired a channel at 59 which is buggering up the TiVo but it seems to make no difference if the aerial is unplugged. I supposed there could still be some ringing getting into the tuner because of the proximity of the aerial cable. Something to try actually.
Anyone got any other suggestions? You've all been very reticent. Whassamatter? Too tough a problem for you;-)?
Cheers,
jah
I've just tried disconnecting the aerial again only this time I've pulled it out of the wall too. I tried changing channels on the TiVo and it's working again! Looks like the people charged with maintaining the communal aerial must've done something. Either that or we've got a new analogue channel broadcasting on channel 59 around here  . Caused me plenty of bother anyway.
My thanks go to Roy at http://www.multimediasystems.co.uk/
If I decide to upgrade my TiVo I'll send it to him;-).

Jahboo - out of interest, are you using analogue cable? Was just wondering why you're not using the SCART connection of the latest VM boxes.
As for TiVo back to the UK, no news is bad news. :(

Yes, still on analogue cable. Probably not for much longer though. I'll set up my TiVo with a digibox when the analogue cable goes which shouldn't be too long now.

Jahboo - I'd also urge you to come back here for recommendations if you decide to upgrade. There may be ...uh.... more cost efficient ways than Roy.
Hi Colin,
I actually have the technical knowledge to do the upgrade myself I just CBAed;-).
Of course, if you're volunteering to do it for the price of pint I'd be only too glad to take you up on the offer. Or anyone else for that matter;-).
Cheers,
jah
