The rip on the United Way public service announcement was darned funny. And there were a few giggles over the introduction of the family (mom not having football skills).

I didn't make it through the rest of the show, but for the few bits after the United Way rip things were spotty as best I could tell. That included the ESPN Tournament Pool clip. It started out ok, was funny when using the "pulled a Peyton Manning" on the picks, but took the joke about how the girl was picking the teams to a level of painfulness really.

I thought the TV Funhouse segment was funny.
Was that supposed to be a spoof of "Dora the Explorer"?

I thought most of the show was funny, unlike most weeks where I think most of the show sucks. United Way sketch was very funny. I liked the NCAA bracket sketch a lot. Bush thing was funny and opening monologue was okay. The news, which is usually the highlight for me was just okay too. The basketball locker room and party sketch weren't funny. And Carrie Underwood's dresses were very short  I'm sure I'm missing some, but that's all I can think of right now.

Yes! I've never really watched Dora, but I'm familiar with the characters. She has a little friend (but it's a monkey instead of a cat) who wears boots and is named "Boots", hence the "Mittens" joke. As soon as I saw that cat, I knew it was going to have that name. I guess Dora really does "talk" to the kids and pause like that for a response. TV Funhouse rarely disappoints, and this was another great one.

"Can you tell me if this person is a girl, or a guy???"

"GET ON YOUR TUMMY... ON YOUR TUMMY! DO IT, @$$%##$!!!"

I'm about half-way through watching... this weeks is uneven as usual, but much better than last week (and I LOVE JLD). Peyton has been a good sport and although relying on cue cards a lot like most of the sports guest hosts do, he's not as obvious about it as some have been.

I agree that the NCAA pool thing was cute at first but ran on too long. Same for the annoying party lady who has to top everything anyone else says. Who doesn't know someone like that?

That first song Carrie Underwood did was really rocking out! I didn't know she had that in her... guess she's Grammy-worthy after all!

And Carrie Underwood's dresses were very short

I think that first outfit was hotpants as there seemed to be a break/separation between each leg. A skirt that short would have been way too prone to crotch shots.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

And oh yeah, what was with Dan Akroyd at the end of the news? I don't watch AI, but I have heard about that guy and how he sucks and about that girl that was crying, so I got that and thought it was kind of funny, but Akroyd just seemed so random. I know he was on the show before.

And I remembered some more sketches. The Brooklyn girls were okay as usual. I could see how some don't like them, but I think they are usually funny. And the meatloaf BMW was just dumb.

Akroyd was one of the original SNL cast, they probably knew he was going to be in the audience and asked him if he'd be willing to do the cameo.

I just assumed they asked him to do it, but who knows. And, as I said, I knew he was on the show before.

Does he have a movie or TV project in the works? Here we all are saying his name. That's why he was there.

I'd say the episode was much, much better than last week, but on the whole just OK.

There weren't any outstanding sketches, except perhaps the United Way one. There was at least one really really bad sketch, the meatloaf sketch. The rest of the sketches were somewhere in the middle... the Bronx Beat was dull, but inoffensive; the ESPN sketch was amusing, but not hilarious, etc.

Is it just my imagination, or is Weekend Update running longer and longer each week?

That's called a "skort". :)

I enjoyed it, but I think Peyton (unlike his brother) is funny and has a really good sense of humor about himself. I've been looking forward to his appearance, and while it wasn't *as* funny as I'd hoped, it was still pretty funny.

ETA: And Dan Akroyd was hilarious. That was a genius cameo. :)

Also...am I the only person who really just hates the Robert Smeigel cartoons? I have no idea why, but I just can't stand them. There's only been one that I've found funny, that I remember.

You must not remember the ones that were done after the 9/11 attacks.
Hilarious!

Yeah, I do.

I've never enjoyed his sense of humor. I don't like South Park, either-it's just a matter of taste.

It's been a recurring comment from other posters that the vocals are mixed way too low, yeah.

The only time I've liked Robert Smeigel cartoons was back when he had The Ambiguously Gay Duo, and I think that was because the talent of Stephen Colbert and Steve Carrell outdid the general not funny that is a Robert Smeigel cartoon.
Loved the United Way sketch, the rest of the show was just meh but not as bad as a lot have been lately. Amy Pohler would be so much funnier if she'd quit laughing at how funny she THINKS she is.

I'm glad I watched an episode of dora a year or two ago, that was a really spot on parody of the show.

I enjoyed the sanjaya bit. Though overall I'm getting really sick of samberg (sp?) because of that insane grin he always has, it was appropriate for the bit at least.

I bet they tried to get hasselhof for the crying part instead of aykroid but couldn't.

I took the shot of Akroyd crying to be a spoof on how much he likes the new people doing his old gig.

As one who has suffered through hours and hours of Dora the Explorer, I found the cartoon absolutely hilarious.

The Sanjaya thing was funny, and the United Way ad was excellent too (they always do good fake ads with sports figures).

That's all I watched. I've figured out how to watch SNL and not get annoyed. Watch the opening sketch, the monologue, the fake ad after the monologue (if there is one), FF to Weekend Update, any cartoon, and any digial shorts, and then delete. It's a relatively funny 20 minutes or so of content.

That's cause his characters usually have an insane grin. Did you notice he didn't grin during the lockerroom sketch even when Peyton and another regular were hiding their faces.

Yeah. It's not like the grin is inappropriate, it's just way too freaky. He should replace heath ledger as the joker...

Carrie sounded a lot better on AI when she performed the same song. So far, the only performance on SNL recently where the vocals weren't too low volume was the shins. Carrie Underwood sounded better than most, but there were some quieter parts she sang that were inaudible.

You know, if a dude sang a song called "Before She Cheats" with those same lyrics, the feministas would be storming the gates of his house with torches and pitchforks.

Yup. Which is why I absolutely can't stand that song. My wife and kids think it's funny. All I can think of is that the girl in the song is seriously disturbed and needs to be locked up.

As for this ep, I laughed more during this show than any other except the Justin Timberlake episode. The Dora bit was the best cartoon I've seen on SNL in ages. Great parody. The United Way bit was awesome too. Loved it when he kept chunking the ball at the kids. And at the end when he's sitting there with a beer. Good stuff.

"Spend time with your kids so Peyton Manning doesn't have to."

I hate that song because, I mean really, if you're going to carve something in leather seats, it's just stupid to make it your name. :)
