Series 1 upgrade failing hangs at starting up screen

I upgrade this tivo years ago with two 120g hard dives. They now are starting to fail. I have bought 2 new 160 gig drives and using Hinsdale guide this is where I am at

I back up my image and tested it with one drive. I can expand the one drive and use the copykern to use the full 160 gig. Put that in and it works great.

Here is the problem
When I try to add the second drive it never gets past the starting up screen.

I have tried different configuration over the last 8 hours.

1. restore back up and expand both at the same time
2. tired to do the one drive completely then add the second one
3. omitted the copy kern
4. switch a and b drives

Any thoughts? I am at my wits end.

Thanks
Chappy

Do you have the jumpers set correctly on the drives?

I am almost postive I do, but I have tired different settings and different cable connections. I am a LAN tech so I do know a little bit about computers.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe the disk cable is bad.

Yea I thought that too, but I put the two 120 gig in and it boots up fine.

Do I need to Bless them with tivobless ?

are you doing the mfsrestore to both drives or just one?

You might want to ask a mod to move this thread to the underground, there are a lot of very smart folks there that can help figure this out.

I did it different ways.
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb both drives at the same time this did not work.

So then I didi the single drive

mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc

put it in the tivo and it boots up and reports 14 hours
put it back in the pc and then do the mfsadd -r 4 -x /dev/hdc
put it back in the tivo it boot up and reports 192?? hours.
put it back in the pc and add the second drive and run mfsadd -r 4 -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb
put it back in the tivo and it hangs.

thanks for your help

note how do I get ahold of a mod to move this?

Use the Report Post link at the bottom left of any post.

Just to be sure, you did backup both drives, correct?

Happy Chappy 03-25-2007 01:35 AM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did the mfsbackup -6s0 /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb

And your using the mfsbackup/restore from the PTVUpgrade CD?

Gregor 03-25-2007 01:50 AM

You'll have to ask the folks in the Upgrade forum.

Sorry I wasn't able to help you.

Are they Seagate 7200.9, 7200.10 or DB35 drives?

If so, they won't work in pairs in a Series 1 TiVo :(

Do a search for 7200.9 on this forum to find out more.

A number of us gave up using 2 drives. The power supply is marginal and a previous poster told you it's impossible with some drives.

I didn't read the entire post. You didn't post which IDE channel (primary, secondary, master slave) you put each drive. I assume you did the commands properly.
